Blonde Wood?

I know that some on here have a bit of free time and pretty good searching skills per the internet. I need some help...

Sam has recently become enamored with .22 LR bench rest competition. She has been shooting a box stock Ruger 10/22, doing very well if I may say so, but she needs more.

The 3 or 4 guys who have been beating her consistantly are shooting custom 10/22's and she feels the need to level the field. She has asked me to build her a race gun.

Now, I am fully capable of the technical end and the actual build. The problem I am having is the stock. She does not like a thumbhole stock, no matter how "cool" it looks. She also does not like a straight stock (think Winchester 94). She has also decided she wants light blonde (I know... it must be a girl thing) furniture with silver/stainless hardware. Finally, she is a left handed shooter.

I can not find such a stock anywhere. What would probably be best would be an inletted, unfinished blank in a light blonde wood. My grip maker can finish the stock any way she wants it, the problem is finding it.

I thought about a laminated stock but finding a light one with no dark accents is like finding a set of rune stones in a Baptist Church....

Richards Gunstocks offers unfinished stocks but I choose not to deal with them. #1, they tell me there is a minimum of 14 weeks waiting list, and #2, apparently they get their blanks offshore to keep down the cost and the poor quality comes out. I've spoken to 3 people who tell me they were doing the final sanding and opened up air bubbles in the laminate.

I spoke to the company and they said "well, even if that happens, we have a good warranty so just send it back for replacement. Let's see.... an additional 14 weeks of waiting and what of the work that was done up to the point of returning the stock? I think not!

My point is, if anyone sees a site or knows of a site that might have what I'm searching for, please let me know.....

Popeye.... I just went to that site and all it is is a list of generic links and it says that domain is for sale...

Just my luck!

Unless you find birch, and walnut stock will be darker. Look at the picture of my Winchester 37. This was an original stock, bleached, then sealed. Not too hard, just time consuming. It's actually lighter than the picture.

Thanks Popeye.... you just hit a homerun!

I just got off the phone with Henry, the owner of Great American Gunstocks in Yuba City, California. I gave him the list of what Sam wanted in her new stock and he simply said... "Can Do!".

I told him she wanted the stock to be as light as yellow pine. He said he had a very light piece of select English Walnut that would be perfect.

Long story short, we ordered a new stock. It is the scaled down, .22 size, Gary Goudy Classic, in Select Light English Walnut. It is ordered with a 14 inch length of pull and with 3/4 of an inch added to the comb. The grip pommel will be cut straight to accept a pommel cap and the butt will be cut square instead of curved to accept a custom butt cap. No thumbhole, no wild colors. Just a classic stock.

The stock will be sent here to us to make sure fit is right on Sam and to double check the inletting to accept her receiver, trigger group, and barrel. Then it will go to Tommy (Tommy2Feathers Custom Grips) to be hand checkered, finished, and have the custom tip, pommel cap, and butt cap carved, fitted, and installed. She hasn't decided what those parts will be made of yet.

The tough part is the waiting. The stock will be between 8 and 10 weeks until it will be done and can be mailed to me.

There is a lesson here.... I had been to the website during my search. I didn't see what we wanted so I dismissed it and moved on! I should have called and spoken to someone who knows....

Thanks Popeye, once again. I thought this was going to be a hard one to find. By the way, you were also right about the price.....

Henry is an artist! This means that he is a bit of a flake. If he asks for money in advance, send NO MORE than half the cost of the total job. This is experience speaking.

He is a nice guy. He is truly an artist. His work is stunning! He ranks among the best stock makers in the world. He is a nut.

UH OH, Popeye... Not good! He said it needed to be paid up front to order it! I paid in full, the whole enchilada! Now you have me worried....

It sure is nice to have representation! If he starts making excuses or doesn't deliver like he promised I'll holler.

Thanks for offering Popeye... I'll keep you posted!
