Working with my son today

Working with my middle son and his M&P 15-22. Think his mag well was getting a little hot because the mags were sticking but otherwise a good time. Letting him run his own drills. He handles it well, his hands are a little small to operate the mag button so it’s a little awkward for him.

Getting hot from a .22? Am I reading that right?
It’s plastic. After 125 continuous rounds I’m sure it was getting pretty warm. My Henry after 25 rds the barrel gets fairly warm.
It's probably more dirty than anything. .22's for the most part shoot very dirty and plastic mags never seem to slide on aluminum very good anyway. I would imagine it won't take much fouling between the two to make them a little sticky.
Try a thin layer of gun oil inside the mag well.

No part of it is aluminum. It’s all plastic, receivers, handguard and all. The only part of this gun that isn’t is the barrel (which is a pretty thick barrel at that, same thickness as the .223 barrel) and the bolt carrier group.

While these are all valid points, I just walked in the other room, shoved 3 different mags in and all 3 dropped free. Gun has not been cleaned, oiled or had the mags cleaned.
I would also add that I don’t think it’s an issue. It was mentioned in passing. That thick barrel will retain heat, plastic will expand with heat. I would feel completely comfortable running 300 rounds through it like we were without issue. It’s not going to get hot enough to melt but warm enough for the mags to require you to pull them free (as demonstrated in the video). It’s a S&W, tolerances are tight, it doesn’t take much variance.

I didn’t post the video to rail S&W, I posted it to demonstrate that the kids is getting better, running his own drills and hitting 98%-99% of his targets moving from target to target.
