I own both. You can't go wrong with either. What kind of hunting? The 30-30 really does have better terminal balistics in my opinion.

I cast my vote for the good ole 30-30. Its a solid performer.

Me too. Both good. But like you said, it depends on what your hunting. I have a Marlin 30.30 and a Marlin.45/70, I also have several Winchesters in the .30/30. I prefer the Marlin. It's stronger and, as someone else mentioned, easier to scope.
For shots under 100 yards on light-skinned game, I think there's about a nickel's worth of difference between the .30-30 and the .44 Mag. The .44 holds more BBs and is less expensive to shoot, if that makes a difference. But you can usually pick up a .30-30 rifle for $100 or so less than a .44.
