President Donald Trump has approved sending American troops to bolster Saudi Arabia's air defenses after Saturday's attacks on the kingdom's oil facilities, which Washington has blamed on Iran, the Pentagon said on Friday.

The Pentagon said the deployment would involve a moderate number of troops and would be primarily defensive in nature. U.S. Marine General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the deployment would not reach thousands of forces but he declined to be more specific.

I don't like that idea. It's like daring Iran to kill our soldiers, then we have skin in the game.

I don't like it either. I fear things are going to get ugly over there real soon.
Iran is looking for a fight.
We have US military personnel spread all over the Middle East. Iran has a multitude of targets to choose from if they are feeling froggy.

Why is it always the US? Where are the other pantywaist countries? I don’t want to get involved in this now, maybe wait and see what is happening and how it is progressing.

Agreed but the Saudi's have a fully capable military with a bunch of new weapons to boot. They don't need us to hold their hand.

Things have been ugly there for a lot of years.

From first hand experience, the Saudi’s have a bought a lot of weapons, but they are afraid to fight.

You sorta answered your own question; they are all pantywaist countries.
It appears that the guys going are Patriot batteries and systems experts to make sure the Saudi’s are using their equipment properly. Those attacks should have been stopped but they weren’t even detected and the incoming path wasn’t detected ether. They have the proper equipment but seem to lack the training. The other troops are support are defense.

Saudi’s are pretty notorious for buying great equipment and never really learning proper and effective operation or maintenance. They need us to supplement and try to teach them...again. We call them an ally, but they are more like a dependent.

Rest easy, gents. We have 100% U.S. Government assurances, and I quote: "The Pentagon said the deployment would involve a moderate number of troops and would be primarily defensive in nature."

See? No Gulf of Tonkin here, boyz! Straight from the dad-blame Pentagon. How much more could you want, eh? Trump approves it, just like Afghanistan.

Poor bastards. There's no greater danger to your liver than a stint in Saudi. They're all booze obsessed because it's banned. God, I've had some horrible hangovers in Jeddah and Dahran. The quality of drink tended to be better in Ryadh, mainly because the Saudis themselves tend to be very partial to Jonny black.
We are developing technology to defend against drone attacks. I would bet this is operational testing.
I'm going to put a collage together with my thoughts included:

Yes, Cc, Sam & AW, I think Iran will start a war weather we like it on not.

Yes, We all ready have a presence in the area. An attack with such precision should not have happened undetected.

But it did happen maybe "undetected", maybe more to this than we are told.
I think we will learn some defense from being there, possibly/probably prevent some future attacks and
get freer access to Saudia airspace which will position us better when Iran tries whatever again.

Of course they will. They have to pretend to have an upper hand, but their economy is tanked; they have to do something, and they will not give in. Their actions attacking Saudi oil fields might have been enough to start a war already in history.

The undetected attack is all on Saudi; they failed to maintain situational awareness and focused on the irritant to the south, forgetting, it seems, that the irritant to their south is fueled by the maniacs to the north east.

There might be some positioning benefits in this, but it would seem to be more a propping up of the military mouse in Saudi. Testing equipment? Maybe. The Israeli’s buy weapons from us too, but they are a prime example of a country that is proficient with the weapons they purchase; the Saudi’s are not. If the Saudi’s could they would buy a mercenary army to fight their battles; they are weak and poorly trained because they lack resolve. They have lots of money, but no resolve. If they ever had to truly defend their sovereignty, they would crumble like a house of cards, and quickly.

AW,
"weak, poorly trained, lack resolve"
Any idea what the root cause(s) leading to that behavior?

Mostly wealth; they got used to buying everything, including labor. They bring people from other countries to do most labor in the country. They are basically very lazy. They also perceive themselves as being the center of the Islamic faith because of Mecca, yet they will indulge in almost any and all immoral acts when they think nobody will find out. Summarized, they are lazy and undedicated/unfaithful.
