Maybe I'll just keep some amplified electric earmuffs on the nightstand and if something goes bump in the night put them on and listen to what's going on through those. Then if I do have to respond my hearing already protected.
I just did that. I got a set of Walker Razor Slim earmuffs and I keep them on my nightstand next to my EDC revolver, a flashlight, a speedloader and my phone. I have not had a chance to get the earmuffs to the range, but they amplify ambient noise very nicely and are easy to activate by touch.

My wife has started to ask me to wear mine in the house lol
