Hi guys, I'm new to the forum not necessarily new to guns haven't done a whole lot of shooting in my life but am rapidly getting more involved in it. I am planning on treating myself this Christmas to a savage 110 Hunter/Trophy Hunter XP I'm almost positive I'm gonna chamber it at .308 being that 6.5 is just a little too expensive for the amount of range time I'm going to be putting in. My question is am I missing anything before I go ahead with this purchase is there any in's or out's I don't know about. I would like to note I live in CA where gun laws are tighter than all mighty hell. Also thank you to any who comment or help I am really enjoying what I'm seeing from this forum.

I'd go with .308 Win. for hunting/recreational shooting.

the 110 series is a good action.......in your case in a 308 it will probably be nowadays the short action model series as in the model 10 or 11......

i do not care for a detachable mag and would prefer to pick my own scope, base, and rings if this is a package deal.............but i am picky.....especially on the bases and rings...

Sorry for the ignorant question but How much affect do the rings have and how would it benefit if I was to get a short action?

The difference between a long action (.30-06 and magnum length cartridges) and a short action (.308 length cartridges) are minor to the 'average' shooter. That being said, I do not believe Savage offers a long action in .308. If I am correct, you must get a Model 10 (short action). This is no big deal.

Here's the big deal. Factory package rifles (those with scope and rings included) usually come with very cheap rings and a scope to match. Over time (often a short period of time) these cheap rings will stop securely holding the scope to the rifle. This causes inaccuracy. Over time (sometimes a short period of time) the cheap scope will break (stop working properly). Once again, inaccuracy. Sure, you can warranty the broken cheap scope but you'll still have a cheap scope and crappy rings.

Search out the best deal you can find on a non-package Savage Model 10. Plan on spending $50 +/- on a quality base and rings and a minimum of $200/$250 on a scope of passable quality. Put them on you quality rifle and enjoy.

i absolutely hate those package deal rings i have seen.....one screw at the bottom....one screw at the top. And they strip out real easily. Besides, i do not trust factory instillation of the rings and bases and especially the base screws..

does not do a dang bit of good for the factory to proudly proclaim that the package deal is bore-sighted to help you out.......only to have the base screws come loose after the first 20 rounds down range.

the most benefit i see for a short action is the over-all length of the rifle is roughly one inch less......with everything else being equal. But i am only a seasonal casual hunter and not a rifleman.
