Bernie Sanders told the CNN townhall on climate change that he would make population control part of his agenda to fight global warming.

Washington Free Beacon:

An audience member asked Sanders about "educating everyone on the need to curb population growth.""Human population growth has more than doubled in the past 50 years. The planet cannot sustain this growth. I realize this is a poisonous topic for politicians, but it's crucial to face," the audience member asked. "Empowering women and educating everyone on the need to curb population growth seems a reasonable campaign to enact. Would you be courageous enough to discuss this issue and make it a key feature of a plan to address climate catastrophe?"

"The answer is yes," Sanders responded. "And the answer has everything to do with the fact that women in the United States of America, by the way, have a right to control their own bodies and make reproductive decisions."

"Population control" as a measure to save the planet has been shown to be horse manure six ways from Sunday. It's the old Malthusian nightmare that population growth is potentially exponential while the growth of the food supply is linear. But Malthusianism fails to account for human ingenuity in using technology and improved methods to massively increase the potential food supply.

Population hysteric Paul Erlich: wrote:

Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich wrote that "Most of the people who are going to die in the greatest cataclysm in the history of man have already been born." He added that by 1975, "some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions." In 1970, he revised his prediction for the worse to warn us, as Perry writes, that "between 1980 and 1989, some 4 billion people, including 65 million Americans, would perish in the 'Great Die-Off.'"

It wasn't just food that would disappear. Erlich and Nobel economist Julian Simon made a famous bet about commodities in 1980:

Ultimately, Simon challenged Ehrlich to a wager. Ehrlich believed that population growth meant increased scarcity and, hence, higher commodity prices. Simon believed that "more people meant more brains," which means better extraction technologies, more efficient methods of production, and the more efficient use of commodities—all of which lead to lower commodity prices. The bet itself was meant to determine whether commodity prices would rise or fall over the period from 1980-1990. If they fell, that would mean that the commodities became more abundant. If instead they rose, that would have signaled that commodities became scarcer. Simon was willing to bet that over any number of years, inflation-adjusted commodity prices would fall.

Needless to say, Simon won.

Simon's theory proved remarkably prescient. In 1970, China and India were net importers of food. By the end of the decade, both nations were exporting food. And yet, Erlich was predicting the worst famines in human history in those two nations by the 1980s.

If we take Simon's theory to heart, more people means more brains working on the problem of climate change. But liberals' brains aren't wired to think that way. Sanders believes in addition by subtraction -- a wholly ignorant and illogical way of thinking that would lead us to catastrophe.

Advocating population control leads to all sorts of evils, including eugenics, forced sterilizations, and infanticide. But if it's going save us from global warming...

I'll take my chances.

Just look at Bernie's eyes and gestures during his speeches. Of course he is insane. And from observations of the "other Mook" candidates, it is probably contagious.

population is a major factor in the destruction of earth if you do not believe in climate change. How do you propose we reduce the population when people refuse to control their urges? or get themselves fixed so they don't have to control their urges? Bernie may be out of touch about US population. By my understanding the US population is declining native population white indian african american. . People would notice if not for all the immigrants and illegals supplanting the numbers. biggest factor is chemicals that act like estragen that is so prevalant in everything. making us men more feminine and reducing our sperm counts. combined with its expensive raising children in the US. I like bernie but I draw the line at population control because everyones going to go back on the eugenics programs pr worse way of thinking and I say screw anyone who does. People with disabilities have just as much right to live as everyone else.

Now I am worried socialists are starting to sound more and more like hitler propaganda. I am not talking about hitler himself he just started the movement. I am talking about the people who pushed his ideas. and made it their own.

I will bet that Bernie is historically illiterate, and out right stupid in ways, and I don't even know where to start. But I can discount what he said by looking at Minnesota, the Dakotas, Iowa and Nebraska, as a region. That may be the most productive land in the world in ways, with corn and wheat, and livestock out the wazoo.

And that is not even taking Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas in account, what I am saying is, all I need to look at is regions, and I know that Bernie is a horses ass, and illiterate about farms and ranches.

I went through Ohio a few times during growing season, and I saw soybeans and cornfields that were unreal. Maybe Bernie should do the same, maybe he needs to drive through Ohio or Iowa.

We grow enough crops and raise enough livestock, to feed a billion people. If India and China would get it in gear, they could feed their own and then export. Bernie is full of it.

How our increased population in the USA (150 million in the early 1950's, 320 million today) effects our Standards of Living and Quality of Life, is a very valid topic. And we need to realize that some resources are limited. How are the roads, freeways and traffic different from 25 years ago in your area? Is water plentiful? How's the air quality as seasons change?

How about all of the illegals draining resources to tackle those other issues? How about the fed folks get out of ALL social issues and leave them to the state - that includes healthcare, welfare, school lunches, and on and on.

Population control needs to start with those countries who cannot feed themselves

problem is that crop in this region is not a major food source, its used in bio fuels etc we are wasting the ground nutrient to fuel our tech. once its leached we are totally screwed because we lose all the microorganisms as well and no one can do it better than nature over time. .

Most places the water use exceeds the aquifers ability to regenerate and its made worse when it does not rain. in Miinesota its at 133% water use to aquifer ability to regen. and more importantly we are using wood way faster than it grows how are we going to house everyone especially as more hurricanes and tornadoes and greed destroys more homes and buildings?

Air quality is very dependent on how many of us use energy etc or change the form of energy. few people to create pollution the cleaner the air.

Pointing out current problems and chanting in unison, 'We're all gonna die' is not a solution to these problems.

Are you aware that food plants are being developed that require significantly less water than do current food plants?

Crumbling infrastructure, biofeuls, etc. are political problems.

Population control is a stupid and unworkable proposal.

I fear his lust for power has made him insane.
That statement would imply that Sanders was once sane, which I highly doubt.
I suspect Sanders has always been flying bat.gif poop.gif crazy.gif .

I can relate to all of us starving by the millions. I went to McDonalds the other morning because I left the house early and didn’t get my breakfast. I really love egg McMuffins. They had the parking lot closed because they were remodeling the front of the restaurant. Didn’t have time to fool around so I drove past. How will we all survive? Without beef and chicken, life will end! Saw a small child waiting for the bus and thought,” I’ll bet those are tender”. That’s the answer! We don’t want to stop having babies, we need the meat. I’ll bet Bernie would think this is a good idea. Lower population and a new food source. No if we could just make flour from lawn clippings........

Your going HUH because you took the greed out of context of the sentence.. example of greed destroys homes and buildings is : after the housing bubble burst and many homeowners defaulted on their mortgage the bank repossessed the homes. The right thing to do would of been to sell the home immediately at cost, rather than keeping the value artificially high as they did. Instead they allowed those homes/buildings to deteriorate so they could be condemned and destroyed in order to create a shortage of housing which in turn raises value for homes and buildings artificially high again.

here is someone who better explains it than I could
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2012/08/another-way-banks-abuse-homeowners-and-distort-markets-refusing-to-take-title-to-foreclosed-properties.html
Due to the house or building being in disrepair its lost and the wood resources that the house is made of is lost as well. the house is then torn down that if not for greed would of been lived in and maintained thus saving the wood in which the house was made of and not needing to cut down new trees to replace the lost house or building..

pointless if their is no ground nutrients left in soil, you can have all the water in the world without the ground nutrients you won't be growing anything.

So I am asking you what do you do when the average joe refuses to self regulate their pollution, and breeding? We all die if he doesn't.

to simplify : Put 10 people in a fish bowl tell them they have to survive for 10 days with only enough calories to feed 1 person for 10 days. and enough water for one person for 10 days. How do you solve that? when one person insists that those resources are theirs and theirs alone and is unwilling to share those resources but is also the strongest meanest of the 10.

That is what we are dealing with but on 7billion+ and add all other life on earth but where 6.5 billion are that one A hole in the fish bowl. how will you survive? how will your kids etc survive?

we ignored the warnings and history of other major die offs. all that is left is drastic action. We are seeing now what was not suppose to be seen till after 2050. I am NOT at all saying we are all going to die. only 99.9 percent of us will unless we do extreme measures. For we were suppose to start the change in our ways when I was born, only we did the opposite and that opposite is exponecially growing due to our tech allowing us to consume our resources so much faster.

that plant that uses less water does not mean its a plant our bodies will recognize as food and not know how to process it, leading to novelty illnesses as a consequence. For example wheat had been modified so much, many of us can no longer safely eat it without health complications. I am Not just talking GMO here even splicing can change the chemistry of the plant into one our bodies don't know how to use and in some cases even poison us.
