North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is reportedly in “grave danger” following surgery, CNN reported on Monday evening, citing an anonymous U.S. official with direct knowledge of the situation.

There have been rumors of the dictator’s declining health in recent days, after he reportedly missed the country’s most important political holiday last week — the birthday celebration of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-un’s grandfather and founder of the communist tyranny.

NBC’s Kathy Tur sparked further speculation after deleting a tweet citing two U.S. officials who purportedly claimed that the authoritarian is “brain dead.”

“North Korean leader Kim ing Un is brain dead, according to two US officials. He recently had cardiac surgery and slipped into a coma, according to one US current and one former US official,” she wrote in the now-deleted tweet:

She later added that she deleted the tweet “out of an abundance of caution.”
“Waiting on more info. Apologies,” she added:

South Korea is reportedly investigating the reports of the tyrant’s condition, but officials from South Korea’s Unification Ministry and National Intelligence Service have not been able to confirm the report, according to the AP.
Bloomberg News’s Jennifer Jacobs reported late Monday evening that the Trump administration “received information that Kim Jong Un had heart surgery last week and if he’s alive, his health is poor.”

“It’s unclear to US officials if he’s dead or alive,” she continued.
“Trump administration officials are looking into who would be in the line of succession if Kim Jong Un dies or is already dead, I’m told,” she added:

Per CNN:
“There have been a number of recent rumors about Kim’s health (smoking, heart, and brain). If Kim is hospitalized, it would explain why he wasn’t present on the important April 15th celebrations,” said Bruce Klingner, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former CIA deputy division chief for North Korea.
“But, over the years, there have been a number of false health rumors about Kim Jong-un or his father. We’ll have to wait and see,” he added.

This story is developing.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in "grave danger" following some type of surgery, according to U.S. intelligence officials.

CNN reported the news Monday night. CNN's chief national correspondent Jim Sciutto noted that Kim recently missed the birthday celebration of his grandfather Kim Il Sung.
Sciutto said there was no indication Kim's health was related to coronavirus, but more his smoking and weight issues.

SThe Daily NK, a Seoul-based website that gathers information from informants inside the isolated nation, reported Tuesday that Kim underwent a "cardiovascular surgical procedure" and was now mostly recovered. It was impossible to immediately verify the report, which the Daily NK said was based on one person inside North Korea.

The Daily NK is part of a group of non-for-profit agencies affiliated with the South Korean Unification Ministry, and has occasionally been contacted by Seoul officials for information. The outlet’s backers include the U.S.’s National Endowment for Democracy, which awarded it $400,000 last year to "raise awareness and understanding of the conditions in North Korea by disseminating accurate, timely and relevant news and information about the country."

Still, the health of North Korea’s leader is one of the state’s most closely guarded secrets, typically only known by a handful of people in the inner circle of leadership. Kim didn’t attend April 15 celebrations for the birthday of his grandfather and state founder Kim Il Sung, one of the biggest days on the North Korean calender.

The Unification Ministry said Friday it was “inappropriate” to speculate about the reasons for Kim’s absence. Kim has made 17 public appearances this year that were mentioned in state media -- at a pace of a little more than one a week -- the ministry said. That’s slightly down from 84 public appearances last year.

Kim, 36 and a heavy smoker, has been shown in state media in recent months appearing at military drills and riding a white horse on the country’s revered Mt. Paektu, where state propaganda says his grandfather used as a guerrilla base to fight Japanese colonial occupiers.

North Korea has been battling to prevent a coronavirus outbreak, which has led to cutting back on celebrations and some other major events and for cadres to appear in protective masks in public events with Kim.

Kim Jong Un's Sister Is Among His Potential Successors

Amid reports Kim Jong Un is in "grave condition" after surgery, it begs the question about the chain of command behind the dictator, since he has no heir apparent.
That leaves Kim's brother and sister are the leading candidates, the New York Post reported.

Kim Yo Jong is the most powerful woman in North Korea, a senior member of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, but it is unlikely the country's patriarchal politics that hands power over the male heirs would hand leadership over to a woman, according to the report.

That leaves older brother Kim Jong Chol, who was passed over when their father Kim Jong Il died in 2011. Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered the murder his half-brother Kim Jong Nam in a nerve agent attack by two women assassins at a Kuala Lumpur airport.

Kim Jong Chol has not be targeted because he has not been considered to have political ambitions, according to the report.

Kim Jong Chol has shown an interest in music and playing the guitar, once spotted at an Eric Clapton concert in London in 2015.

Academic fear political upheaval if the family's 72-year reign ends, and the U.S. reported has contingency plans in place if there is a humanitarian crisis, according to the report.
