that's one reason I live in the country where I can set up my own range
That's a luxury right there! That said I used to shoot a lot of archery, especially if I drew a tag...I made my own target stands and have 3 targets, so I can go anywhere and set up a range for practice. I don't know how many times I had to pack up and leave due to morons shooting guns. One day I was shooting my bow and I hear shots, then bullets start whizzing by! I packed up my gear and headed home. I was about 1/2 mile off the main road and as I drove up out of the draw I was shooting in I see a guy, with 2 little kids shooting at a target he has set up. He's like 60 feet off the main road, his target is not set up so that he's shooting into the hill behind him and it was set up so he was shooting down the draw I was in! I pulled up behind him, rolled my window down and said, "Hey! You might want to set your target up so you are shooting into the hillside; I was down in the draw and had bullets whizzing by!" He apologized and told me he hadn't even thought about that. He then went and moved his target.

Gun safety was the first thing my dad taught me, before he even let me handle a gun. What is common sense to some of us is not for others.

I like to shoot in my backyard and even though there is a new house behind my target, I was here first. Just kidding. I always like a backstop of earth and nothing beyond that. We used to have a backyard range that was above a swamp. We would be shooting down hill so every shot went into the mud. Our club has a large asphalt killings pile that we use as a backstop and behind that is a good hill just incase.

]There in we find the root of the problem. Decades ago it became politically incorrect for fathers/mothers to teach their off spring about guns. As a result we have a society that neither understands guns, nor the skills required for hunting .
