Hello All,

I am a gun noob working toward my first hunting rifle. After much research and holding a number of rifles, I'm leaning toward a .308 Browing X-Bolt. Browning also has a couple models with a raised cheek piece.

My question is: what exactly does a raised cheek piece do and is it something I should consider? The cheek piece adds about $100 to the price.

Shooting a weapon of any sort requires you being able to replicate the shot over. The cheek piece is adjustable and helps to get a consistent head rest against the cheek piece. Everytime you look down the scope every thing needs to be in the same place.

On rifles, especially with scopes, a raised cheek piece gives support to your head as you look into the scope at your target. It is basically a comfort aid---takes the strain of placing your cheek on the gun butt away--letting you concentrate more on your aim. I have many rifles with----many without--------- go to a gun store and try both out---hold them up like aiming them--see what you like. The Browning is a fine firearm as is an out of the box Savage. Either way----spend money on a good scope----getting a fine shooting rifle and putting cheap glass on it is like putting retreads on a Corvette. Welcome to the forum. Basically what Larry said in fewer words.
