Hello all. As a (hopefully) soon to be gun owner I'm looking for advise on a new purchase.
I have 9 years experience in the US Army, firing everything from M4's, M9's, M249's, M240's and the M2 .50 cal.
My wife owns a little .380. We've gone to the range a few times, and the last time I rented a Smith & Wesson .44 magnum with a 4" barrel, and I loved firing it!
I'm looking for a good general purpose revolver, something that is good for personal protection (max lethality without over penetration), but also something that has decent accuracy and can be carried concealed. I decided on a .357 magnum.
For me it's between the Ruger SP101 Model 5771, and the Smith & Wesson Model 686. I'm looking for opinions between the two.
Last, is anyone familiar with gun laws in North Carolina? I'm active Army stationed at Fort Bragg and I have Secret security clearance. I was a denied a gun permit because... get this.. I got in trouble for fighting twenty years ago, when I was 19. I was charged with misdemeanor battery, and it was not domestic violence. That was the one and only time I've ever been in trouble with the law.
The lady at the Sheriffs Office gave me a name and address of a District Judge where I can submit an appeal. I'm mailing it off tomorrow. Has anyone experienced anything similar? How rare is it for appeals to be approved?
