Hello,
My Grandmother passed away semi recently, she was an antique dealer and some what of a hoarder. So among many old things we have inherited there is this old rifle. I wanted to ask and see if someone here could tell me what it is and how old it could be. Thanks !

looks like a Japanese type 99 Arisaka......as in a late war "last ditch" variant.

Yup. That's a 'Substitute Standard' Type 99 Arisaka. It was manufactured very late during WWII.

Substitute standard variants are generally characterized by fixed sights, short hand guards, wooden butt plates and cruder external finishes. The intent was that after Japanese victory, the rifles with shortcuts on them might later be upgraded to the early type 99 pattern with things like monopods and dust covers. The final months of the war ushered in some last changes like the omission of sling swivels, omission of the dust cover slots in the receiver, etc.
