Short list-----Turks, Mongols, England (twice), Russia and now the US---- all but the last figured out that Afghanistan was a lost cause and pulled out. Past time to leave.
Not sure I would say Alexander conquered Afghanistan---he headed that way in 330 BC and was dead in Babylon 7 years later.
His campaign did have a lasting effect from the hundreds of thousands of Greek and Macedonian soldiers he left there.
Interesting quote:
"The type of guerilla-style fighting that Alexander faced during the Afghan campaign was described centuries
later by the chronicler Plutarch, who compared Afghan tribesmen to a hydra-headed monster: as soon as
Alexander cut off one head, three more would grow back in its place."
