Gauge isn't terribly important, but I'd like something compact (NFA minimum of 18"/26" would be ideal) with a pistol grip and a pump action.

I've looked at the Mossberg JIC and Cruiser models, but I'm sure there's more out there.

Suggestions?

Are you set on a pump action? Because if you're willing to spend the extra money I would recommend a Remington 1100 - greatly reduces the recoil with full power loads. The downside being you can't use lower-power loads.

Baring that, you can't go wrong with the Remington 870.

Right here. And hopefully after reading, you'll ditch the idea of a pistol grip. Those only have value on movie sets.

That's a polite way of putting it.

Remington 870
Benelli Super Nova
Do not slam the pistol grip until you have tried it. My Benelli Super Nova Steady Grip is a very nice shotgun. I will admit, it does take a few rounds through the barrel to get used to the grip but now is not a problem.

Remington 870 is a great shotgun.

You can also look at the Mossber 500 JJC Cruiser -

Here is my Benelli Super Nova and the unting results from 9 November.

Me and my Benelli on the left. My buddy has his Benelli. He won that Super Black Eagle II at the same banquet I won mine.

I am going to have to agree with you Batman. And I am not making a slight against anyone, but most of the time, in my experience, those who have knocked a pistol grip on a shotgun, are those who have never used one.

Well to clarify, there is a pistol grip in conjunction with a shoulder stock, and there is just a pistol grip by itself, such as is found on the Mossberg "cruiser" and other Rambo "look at me" shotguns. The former is just fine. The latter is just silly.

Pistol grip only shotguns are a bad idea. Pistol grip with full stock is personal preference. The reason for pistol grip only is to make the weapon more compact, but unless it's an AOW with the short barrel you aren't gaining anything.

If you want a home defense shotgun to be more compact you have to take some length out of either the barrel or the action. Taking it off of the stock doesn't make the weapon any more manueverable, only more concealable, which you don't need for HD. So if you want more compact than an 18" pump, either get a double barrel coach gun or a short barrel shotgun.

The latter is what I was speaking of.

There are a couple I can recommend. I've got a Mossberg Persuader in 12-Gauge and a Mossberg Youth in 20-gauge. The former is for yours-truly, and the latter for the wife. Both work very well and didn't cost a ton. There are aftermarket stocks available for both. I tried the folder on the Persuader, but it is not as good as a collapsible or standard stock..

Take care.

I'm with Bat and CDP on this one, ... I have experience firing shotguns with both configurations - the rear pistol grip, again - from my experience - is more of a shorter range point and shoot weapon and because it is more compact it is very useful in confined spaces. I also have found that a vertical "pistol" grip on the front slide is very desireable when used with a rear pistol grip. It takes a bit of forearm strength and wrist lock to be able to effectively use the pistol grip - something that my battered wrists no longer care for. I now keep a 20 ga. pump as my main HD shotgun - loaded with #3 buck rounds - it has a bit less kick and at the 20 foot range will do what needs to be done. I watched a couple "kids" (mid 20's) shooting clay birds a couple weeks ago - they were using Mossberg 500 Cruisers with pistol grips (no shoulder stocks) and they were having fun but not busting many birds.

I would say Remington 870 pump. More than likely if someone is in your house and they hear that bad boy chamber when you pump, you won't get a chance to pull the trigger because they will be GONE! This happened once when a guy was in someone's house. The home owner pumped the shotgun and without hesitation the perp dove through the neerest window and the police found him when they followed the blood trail from where the glass had cut him. True story!

Personally i like the idea of a pistol grip on a shotgun
I currently owna mossberg 535 turkey tactical shotgun which comes with the pistol grip and an adjustable stock. I find this gun loads of fun to shoot and easy to handle but thats my opinion.

You really cant go wrong with an 870 though

I have had a Choate full stock w/pistol grip on my 870 since the mid 80s. I find it helps control especially when having to hold on with one hand. Also it helps control recoil.
