Just grabbed an SKS off of my grandma who knows about this much about the weapon:

Her sons got it for her 15 years ago for hunting. Why they did that I have no idea.

It's been shot about 10 times.

It's been stored since the first year she got it.

It's completely stock.

*EDIT* After looking at it, I see it's a Norinco.

It's now in my hands and I'd like to service it, put a scope on it, and shoot it. I can handle the servicing myself but putting a scope on it I'm a little befuddled. I think I may have to take it to a gunsmith to do it for me as I don't have the tools required I don't think. Any opinions on it?

No need for a gunsmith with a SKS. You can buy a rear cover that has a mount built right into it and they are made by several different companies. Also doing it this way you don't change the gun as you can just swap the rear cover back at anytime if you want to use the regular sights.

Any reference you can show me of that product? After a couple minutes of searching I'm not finding a replacement cover; just rails that you have to modify your current SKS to use.

*EDIT* Found a couple actually. Unfortunately they're polymer not steel. Will probably look goofy as all get out having a modern polymer on a wood/steel weapon.

Every time the trigger is pulled the receiver cover moves just a little bit. No scope on a receiver mount will hold zero.

The only way to securely mount a scope on an SKS is to drill and tap the side of its receiver and use an AK style mount.

Since the SKS is a 100 - 150 yard weapon mounting a scope is counterproductive (its not worth it).

Hmmm.... Well I saw a video of some 250 yard shots on a steel plate but I mean... Nothing accurate enough to brag about. Not accurate enough to hunt with IMO. I've heard of people using them to hunt but I, for one, would not want to miss the heart and track a deer down in the dark all night. Maybe I should just forget about a scope. Home defense or range fun would be my primary focus for the gun if I were to keep the weapon as mine.

Yeah, forget about the scope. Not worth it in any way.

I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with mine but only out to about 100 yards. After that, it's just not going to perform.

Fun rifle, though, for plinking.

I had an SKS - wouldn't have put a scope on it either. I traded it straight across for a 1911 pistol that had 400 rounds through it. I got the better end of that deal.
