Heavily edited.

In June, one of the suspects in the plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer took to the relative privacy of a Facebook group to make clear his brewing hatred. Adam Fox called Whitmer a “tyrant *****,” according to an FBI affidavit, and declared, “I don’t know boys, we gotta do something… give me some ideas of what we can do. ”

Such online declarations, brimming with anger and potentially violent intent, have become staples of extremism-fueled crime news in recent years, from police killings to synagogue massacres to bombing plots. Before they become real, they percolate online, courtesy of a social media ecosystem that is ubiquitous, barely moderated and well suited to helping aggrieved people find each other.

“Social media companies have been allowing these communities to build and grow, ignoring the mounting evidence that memes, posts and images encouraging violence can and do translate into actual violence,” said Cindy Otis, a former CIA analyst and vice president of analysis for the Alethea Group, which tracks online threats and discovered the Wolverines page. “Not only have many of these Michigan pages and groups been on Facebook for years, the Facebook algorithm actively recommended other militia-related groups and pages to join, allowing each page and group to expand their reach. ”

Though it’s impossible to know exactly what role social media plays in developing criminal intent, incidents of violent extremism increasingly are accompanied by substantial evidence of online activity that, after arrests, is laid out in court documents and cobbled together by independent researchers.

In the 15-page FBI affidavit about the Michigan plot released Thursday, there are three references to a private Facebook group and 11 to encrypted communication apps. Independent researchers soon found the arrested men active on Twitter, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube.

SITE Executive Director Rita Katz said, “In recent months at SITE, we’ve watched different corners of the far right and militia groups flooding the same predictions of civil war, military coups, and chaos. It’s a startling consensus among them that violence against the 'other’ is inevitable. ”

An examination by Alethea Group and the Global Disinformation Index, which also tracks online threats, suggests social media has been instrumental in the escalating actions by Michigan militias, first over pandemic-related restrictions imposed by Whitmer and now in the run-up to the November election, despite recent efforts by Facebook and other platforms to curtail violent activity.

...I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie. I saw great battles reported where there had been no fighting, and complete silence where hundreds of men had been killed. I saw troops who had fought bravely denounced as cowards and traitors, and others who had never seen a shot fired hailed as the heroes of imaginary victories; and I saw newspapers in London retailing these lies and eager intellectuals building emotional superstructures over events that had never happened.
In short, Orwell’s brush with totalitarianism left him worried that “the very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world.”

The New Thought Police?
The First Amendment of the US Constitution, fortunately, largely protects Americans from the creepy authoritarian systems found in 1984, East Germany, and China; but the rise of “cancel culture” shows the pressure to conform to all sorts of orthodoxies (smelly or not) remains strong.

The new Thought Police may be less sinister than the ThinkPol in 1984, but the next generation will have to decide if seeking conformity of thought or language through public shaming is healthy or suffocating.
FEE’s Dan Sanchez recently observed that many people today feel like they’re “walking on eggshells” and live in fear of making a verbal mistake that could draw condemnation.

Thru time, the nature of man remains the same.
There is more to all of this than appears at first glance.

the ultra right radical faction and their recruiting is just as dangerous as the militant islamist factions and their recruiting......both willing to use propaganda to recruit, whip people into a frenzy, and to use violence.

just waiting now for ANTIFA and BLM to do the exact same thing on terrorism by murder and kidnapping.....but so far, they are content on arson, beatings, mischief...........at least publicly........

Where have you been?

This list was published way back on June 6th and doesn’t address the dozens killed since then, including the Trump supporter in Portland shot by Antifa member or the 2 officers that were gun down while sitting in their squad car in LA

What is happening is worse. They are targeting innocent citizens. Just as a hypothetical, let say they did manage to capture and kill a low hanging fruit. What would come of it? Nothing. That low hanging fruit would be replaced in an hour and god and country would be coming after that one group that did it. You want to inflict pain and suffering, you target the citizens, which is exactly what they are doing.

Besides, who among them is going to arrange that coop? Grandmaster Jay and the NFAC? Blahahaha. Those baboons can’t refrain from shooting each other during marches. He actually did a video trying to explain how that first incident happened that shot 3 of his “soldiers”, he pulled out an AR and everything that came out of his mouth was just flat out wrong. He doesn’t even understand how the gun works. Then it happened again, another moron in that group had another friendly fire incident.

If that group had actually marched into a real militia, they’d be pissing down their legs. If that’s who the left has to lead the charge, a civil war would be over in an hour. BLM and Antifa are just ignorant pawns.

That's what terrorists mostly do which is pretty much why they call them terrorists. You never know where, when or who they will strike at next and that brings fear to the masses.

the problem is......killing an innocent citizen stays in the news cycle for one day and has little political impact.......going after a governor, mayor, or such will cycle for days nationally and globally as it actually makes more of an impact on the poiitical statement.....not to mention a pro propaganda boom from sympathetic followers that see more glory in killing a governor.....instead of some avg joe.

thank goodness this high profile attempt failed......failure has the opposite affect hopefully for recruitment....

I don’t disagree with that assessment, however, when an official gets nabbed, it might make headlines, but it’ll feel like a distant fight to the vast majority of people. When it’s someone from your neighborhood or local community it makes people panic because it his close to home. The news might forget but those communities won’t. Communities hundreds of miles away start taking notice.

I don't agree that is what is being said. Just that many governors blame the president for their actions. I believe all of us would never agree that she deserves the actions of those 13 people. We have enough divide right now but when you get down to it we are all complaining about the same thing, just how to fix it is different. One thing is for sure, if congress would get their act together then maybe we all would be better off in these times. What we need is the political parties to stop being partisan and talk to each other to fix this nation.
im glad somebody believes in miricles
