Law enforcement officials in Lake County, Indiana, said a man was killed, and his two teenaged children were injured after a live grenade in a grandfather's belongings detonated.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department said officers responded to reports of an explosion in Lake of the Four Seasons at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Investigators learned that a family was going through a grandfather’s belongings at a home on Lakeshore Drive when they found a grenade.

Someone then pulled the pin from the grenade, and it exploded.

When police arrived, a 47-year-old man, later identified as Bryan Niedert of Lake of Four Seasons, was found unresponsive and later died.

His two children, an 18-year-old female and 14-year-old male, were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for shrapnel wounds.

Porter County, a neighboring county, sent its bomb squad to the scene to help secure the area and determine whether any additional explosives were inside the home.

The investigation into the incident is being conducted by Lake County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives and crime scene investigation unit.

My wife actually read the last night and turned to me and said “ You don’t have any of those…do you?” To which I replied “ Really? You know I get them at Walmart.” She amazes me sometimes.

That's what happens when your grandpa thought it would be smart to bring a live grenade back from the war as a souvenir. F'ing idiot.

Back in the day the military wasn't so strict on their supplies. From what I've been told now at the practice ranges they have to bring back every pin and even look for as many fragments as they can find and turn them in. Back when this grenade was probably taken you could literally buy dynamite and hardware stores. Sometime in the late 60's early 70's that was changed. Finding live grenades in the homes of WWII, Korean and Vietnam vets is not all that rare. I have probably read a dozen or more stories in the past 20 years.

About 30 years ago I knew a guy who claimed he had 3 frags he brought back from Korea. He had them buried in his back yard in a spot only he knew. He’d be about 80 now so who knows where they are or even if he’s still alive. Could be a bad treasure hunt for some idiot. Funny thing about this guy was that he was against anyone having a gun but he had 3 grenades. Typical yay for me but not for thee.
There was a old lady who put one in a recycling bin in Albany after her husband died. I guess it sat on their mantle for years and she just chucked in there. luckily the driver spotted it and called it in.
If you’d have seen it, it would have disappeared………sorta.
