The US should, via NASA, put a perminant manned outpost on the moon. They could haul up all the required equipment to build a landing strip for a form of the space shuttle, maybe not the current one, but something similar, and all other required building materials that would be required using the heavy lift rockets that NASA has in inventory, and chase after it with modernized forms of the Apollo equipment.

The space station was supposed to do all that.

You definitely hit a nerve with me. As a child of the Space Age and the son of one of the designers/builders of the Lunar Module, I think that it is shameful that it has been 35 years since our last landing on the moon.

I really don't care what priorities there may be; our country, let alone mankind in general, needs the resources, technology and accomplishment that was the space project. The research and cost of such a project is not an "either-or" situation. We would not have to give up, say a roads project or a congressional pay raise for a new space project.

We should have landed on Mars 20 years ago.
