The area closest to me for hunting is shotgun only. In the main deer zone I can use a handgun also, but the public land specifies shotgun use, with slugs only.
So, I need to buy a shotgun. More than likely, I will buy an 870, but I am unsure about which version, and all-round compatibility with shot/slugs.
I have very little knowledge of shotguns, so any advice will be appreciated.
The best value is for a remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. Both are available as combos, a slug barrel and a shot barrel with interchangable chokes. You should be able to get either for $300-$400.
I don't own any remington shotguns, but I do own their rifles, and they are excellent values. I own 3 Mossberg shotguns and they are very reliable.
I forgot to mention the Benelli Nova. I just bought a used oen 6 months ago, and it is the smoothest pump shotgun I ever shot. You can get one new for about $400, and buy the extra barrel for it when you need it. I have not seen it as a combo.
I own a Benelli Super Nova pump, a Mossberg 835 and an Ithaca single shot.
Both the Benelli and the Mossberg have rifled slug barrels that you can either buy as a combo or add later on. I can highly recommend either shtogun as well as the Benelli Super Black Eagle, Remington 870, Browning BPS and Winchester 1100. I have had the pleasure of shooting all of them many times.
I am going to have to look into the 870 combo, that sounds like what I need. I dont think I would use it enough to go for a high-end shotgun, but I guess a good base model with a spare barrel would fulfill multiple roles.
I suggest getting and 870 Remington at a Walmart or other discount store.
