I want to change from a plastic mag to a steel one for several reasons, but most importantly the one i have doesn’t secure the bullet in the top of the mag so it can stand straight up causing feeding and ejecting issues. As you’ve guessed, thats All that is available for it. Since it’s plastic I can’t modify the top or I would re-work it. I’m a welder and I have mig, tig, and stick so I can weld up a new mag (likely tig it with silicon bronze to keep the heat warp down). I have not built a mag before however, though I’ve made several technical small items that required a fit within 1mm. I’ve got 20ga sheetmetal, would prefer 22 ga but that’s what I have at this moment. I’m making this thread to ask anyone that has done it for any helpful advice, and to show my progress...... failing or not. This would be a bit easier if it were a large caliber but unfortunately it’s for a 22 so nothing about it is going to be simple.

not having a follower on the front is one critical flaw. As you can see it works great on my S&W 22 mag.

I would think welding would be the easy part (though I am not a welder) and forming the parts the more challenging. I used to build aircraft, and the challenging thing was forming the parts; of course most all we did was aluminum. But getting the parts shaped is essential to assembly, as I am sure you are well aware. That is my initial thoughts for what they are worth. I think it would be great if you can do it though! And I would enjoy hearing how you progress if you are willing.

BTW, I agree with the desire for metal instead of plastic mags. I really dislike the plastic mags for my Howa mini-action. I am hoping somebody will make metal ones some day... And it is the pits to have a really good gun that is kinda goofed up by plastic mags like you are dealing with.

While not an easy thing to make, I’m sure it can be done. Magazines can be finicky from the factory where they have all the jigs and templates. It may be a fruitless effort but fun none the less. Give it a try.

Yes I agree so far I have only done good things with this gun such as polishing the feeder and working on the trigger and every time I do something it gets a little better and it works a little better but this magazine is it’s Achilles’ heel for sure and I am trying to figure out a way to make one to solve this issue. As it started out not very great and ended up what I wanted, I’m extremely pleased with this gun right now short of this mag. That’s a far cry from where it began. I make my own Jeep parts for my CJ7 and aside of the pride and pleasure of being a 1 off part, I’m able to make exactly what i want. I will indeed take on this issue and see what comes of it. I do expect good things but I’m not sure how much trial and error it’s going to take. The Smith and Wesson magazine would fit up inside the gun I want to use it on but it’s not long enough unfortunately to get to the top. I’ve decided that this 22 gauge sheet-metal is still too thick so I’m going to have to go and buy some more tomorrow and start on the project.

Here’s my other ongoing metal project I’ve made plenty of things for. We got snow last week for the first time in years and I was able to go out and play to check a few of those parts I made.

I’m thinking 24ga is what will do best. I thought i had 22 or 20, but this is 18 and it’s way too hard to work with for what I’m trying to do. I did manage to get a size and shape similar to what I want and tig weld it with silicon bronze so it should not be an issue with 24 ga material. I was having to take out too much material to make the bend that accommodates the spring in the front of the mag and had to heat it up a lot to get it to bend like i wanted. This won’t be an issue with thinner material.

From what i have read in the past making magazines so they work reliably is a very difficult task. making the body is the easy part(nice job btw). Figuring out the spring pressure, feed lip orientation and follower angle is the difficult part. It all has to work in relation to the bolt and feed ramp. Good luck, i know it's not something i would want to try.

Might save yourself some trouble if you can build the body and order the internals as separate parts. I lack the equipment to make such fine welds, so I've not tried it, but I've given it some thought.

The one thing you have going for you is that you’re reverse engineering it. It might be a good idea to cannibalize the spring and follower.

One thing to notice as I go along is that there is an ejector built into the magazine on this gun so am I making an ejector that will work a little more aggressively into the magazine.

I’m neither. Just a welder. I don’t have what i need to make this round corner for the spring retainer so I’m trying to make do with heat and hammers. Gonna be a long adventure to get this round.

One1 what welder do you have? I was helping my neighbor fit a 1/4 panel on a car today. And saw how nice his welder does. He has a Millermatic 211.

you will never find or get a chance to use what I’m using Lol, I can’t do anything normal. Mine is a 1957 Lincoln idealarc and i use CKWORLDWIDE Tig torches. There are very few of these, and less than 4 in restored condition.

I’ve got the round part done. Now to weld it up.
