Ok so yesterday my buddy and I went to the range for some target practice. I brought My AR15 and my buddy brought his M14. We were there for about 40 mins or so and 2 older range officers and like 3 other older dudes walked over so we greeted them said hello and how they were doing. They completely shut us down and just started with "Now what are those rifles?" we explained what they were and another goes "Now THOSE look pretty tactical" and "Now what do you need those for? Are you in the military?" I should also state that they were crowding so closely around us looking at our rifles and just going on about how tactical they look and why they arent necessary and going on an on and on. We were respectful the whole time, we weren't rapid firing or acting irresponsible and there was no rule about what types of rifles you can shoot there they were just giving us such a hard time for no reason. We thought we were gunna get kicked out but these old guys kept encircling us and complaining about our rifles. Man cant a guy just go shooting in peace anymore?? I cant be the only one whose experienced this.

I tend to reflect what I get. Give me respect and I will be respectful towards you. Give me derision and I will give derision back to you with interest. Be rude to me and I will introduce you to the rudest most unpleasant person you never wanted to meet.

" Sounds to me like you old coots don't like the new AR-15s. I understand. Old people get set in their ways and all this new fangled hardware can be a little confusing. If me and my friend here weren't so busy we could teach you all about the new stuff. It's sort of like when the cartridge came out and the percussion cap was built into the bullet. That was before my time but I am sure you all remember that? It was a huge change but once you guys got used to it you saw what a big improvement that was."

" You know they have been making these for about 50 years now... Are these the first ones you've seen in person? Why not wait over there and when we are done shooting here I'll teach you how to shoot one. "

elmer fudds do exist.......as does
mall ninjas,
glock fanatics
rabid glock haters,
primitive BP folks
the modern in-line crowd
the mouse gun primary folks
the must begin with a "4" in the caliber folks......
the capacity wars

i have my own personal views and might share them on occasion....and as i am passionate about some of my guns i might get a tad passionate in some of my views.....but never to the point of harassment....or at least not intentionally. Though as with all things, sometimes a passionate view can get away from us.

M14.......or are you referring to a mini 14, M1A, or an actual M14?

As far as the AR15 and an M14.........I tolerate them in general issue form......but absolutely despise any of them that are after-marketed tacti-cool dolled up with every additional gadget known to Brownell's and Cheaper than Dirt.......too much lipstick on a pig as far as i am concerned as i like things rather vanilla.

that might make me a Fudd......but i won't get in your face about it.......less you start making fun of my revolvers......then we can have a "spirited" discussion...

then perhaps i can tempt you to the real Dark Side.......and once you get a taste of Black powder in the form of a 54 caliber hawken sending a 425 grain hunk of lead down range......but please, none of those sabot or power belt plastic stuff..........

Welcome from NC

This is pretty much the case.

Harassed by Fudds...
By the thread title, I can tell you were at least part of the problem. I have been approached in a similar manner by groups at the range (most often with my Tavor). Try asking questions about and taking an interest in their own rifles while showing yours in a respectful manner. I always end up exchanging rifles for a couple of shots in these situations. I often end up learning something and make a new friend.

I have never experienced anything like this before, anywhere. Nothing, not even close.
Same here. We were at the range today with a pile of guns as usual. We didn't have any scary black guns (today) but we had a couple of mosins, 3 sks, 1 svt, 1 garand, tokarev, nagant revolver, mini 14, 1911. A few others were there as well with everything from BP rifles to another mini 14. No complaints, nice, cordial, we just had some plain old fun and even had some occasional mag dumps. With the amount of .556 brass i see laying around i doubt we'll ever have a problem there.

No one ever talks to me about anything at the range. I'm unapproachable. I don't go to public ranges and it is extremely difficult to talk over gun fire. Oh, and don't touch my brass.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Try not to piss off any of the Fudds.

Greetings and Salutations

A person's age has no bearing on their civility and tolerance. Well, civility and tolerance have been known to decrease as a person ages. Then again, your use of the derogatory term 'fudd' goes to prove my first point.

As to 'new fangled', I used a M16 in Nam during the 1960s and the M14 was accepted by the US military in 1956. Neither qualify as 'new fangled' -- unless you have enough crap hanging off one to qualify it as a crew served weapon. In that case, derision is appropriate. Oh yeah, Ruger's Mini 14 was introduced in 1973 so its been around for a while too.

The only optic I have on my AR is a simple inexpensive red dot. I don't have the money or the need to "tacticool" my ar. And my friend was using an M14 like the scout rifle not a Mini 14.

Guys just to let you know me and my buddy are nowhere near the wanna be military. We don't buy a ton of optics and we don't have an arsenal at home haha I respect all types of gun owners but harassing me when i am responsible, respectful and just having fun is no reason to be all up in our personal space judging us. I just wanted to shoot in peace is all :(
