If you're not a reloader, I would go with .45 Colt, and here's why: Both .357 and .44 Magnums allow you the flexibility of using "special" versions of those calibers for practice, plinking, self-defense, SASS matches, or whatever. So far so good. The problem is the magnum loadings are immensely powerful, and the special loadings are relatively weak. There's very little, if anything available in a mid-range power level.

That's where the .45 Colt really shines. For low-level power, buy Cowboy loads. For bringing down locomotives, UFOs, Bigfoot, or Nessie, use Buffalo Bore ammo. But right between these extremes, is the original standard load for this caliber, and it's simply beautiful - a 255 grain bullet at 950 fps. In revolvers designed to rotate in the hand with recoil, it is delightful to shoot - completely manageable and extremely practical. For self-defense, it is unsurpassed, and out of a 16" or longer rifle barrel, it is superb for hunting anything up to Deinonychus or young ceratopsians.

Rarely will you find on your retailer's shelf a single load that is so good at doing so much. Add in the historical cachet, and you can't help but smile.
