I have plans to go shooting with my dad on my 18th birthday. I know the owners of a local gun shop really well, and would it be legal for them to run my 10 day background check 10 days before my 19th birthday? I really want to pick up an 870 or a Mini 14 as "my" first gun (that I buy myself, as I don't just pull cash out of my ass) and my dad NEVER wants to take me shooting. Anybody know? Can't wait to haul ass out of Commiefornia...

I would say a big fat NOT on that one , your not 18 , you wont be 18 till your B-Day , so it wouldn't be legal for the DEALER to do that , you would still be a minor 10 days prior .
JMHO there , but it is probably fact too

Slight difference in your 870 and Mini-14 costs , like double for the Mini-14 , hope you knew that
You must be planning to be part of the ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE ASSAULT TEAM

I am surprised you have not called your Gun Shop and asked them about the 10 day thing ?

Happy birthday anyway... I wouldn't even ask my LGS to do something like this. At worst it will be 10 days late for you. At worst for your LGS owner, it could cost him 10 years in a Federal Prison.

California is so far out there with their laws, you need to ask someone there who is really knowledgeble on the laws-----like your local gun shop.

Thanks everybody. I wanted to ask here to avoid looking like an idiot.
Trust me young man, asking is one of the best ways to learn, as long as the party you are asking knows the correct answer. I passed the point of being scared of looking like an idiot a long, long, long time ago. Especially with the minefield gun laws have become. A misstep now will be with you the rest of your life. Good luck and Happy Birthday.

Get your Dad to buy it now, for himself. When you're 18 he can give it to you, and since you are father and son, there won't be any transfer fee's when he does. But, here in CA these gun laws seem to be changing every hour, so I may be wrong. But thats how I gave my boys their first gun at 18.

Illegal! Don't even bother to ask them. Approval will be denied by the State.

A possible, and legal, solution.
