Burl is from the root and is typically very nicely figured. However, a lot of fancy grain is also weaker which is why you see shotguns with burl near the butt but straight grain through the weak part of the wrist

Burl is actually a growth on a tree. If you've ever seen a round glob on the side of a tree that's burl. They can come from roots too. Yes it's usually very strong but sometimes it can chip easily but usually won't crack easily like a straight grain wood.
