Just when we thought colleges could not spout loonier ideas, we have a new one from American University. They hired a professor to teach other professors to grade students based on their "labor" rather than their writing ability. The professor that American University hired to teach that nonsense is Asao B. Inoue, who is a professor at the University of Washington in Tacoma in interdisciplinary arts and sciences. He is also the director of the university's writing center. Inoue believes that a person's writing ability should not be assessed, in order to promote "anti-racist" objectives. Inoue taught American University's faculty members that their previous practices of grading writing promoted white language supremacy. Inoue thinks that students should be graded on the effort they put into a project.

The idea to bring such a professor to American University, where parents and students fork over $48,459 a year in tuition charges, could not have been something thought up by saner members of its academic community. Instead, it was probably the result of deep thinking by the university's diversity and campus life officials. Inoue's views are not simply extreme but possibly hostile to the academic mission of most universities. Forgiving and ignoring a students' writing ability would mostly affect black students. White students' speaking and writing would be judged against the King's English, defined as standard, pure or correct English grammar.

Professor Noam Chomsky, called the father of modern linguistics, formulated the generative theory of language. According to his theory, the most basic form of language is a set of syntactic rules that is universal for all humans and that underlies the grammar of all human languages. We analyze and interpret our environment with words and sentences in a structured language. Oral and written language provides a set of rules that enables us to organize thoughts and construct logical meaning with our thoughts.

Not holding students accountable to proper grammar does a disservice to those students who overall show poor writing abilities. When or if these students graduate from college, they are not going to be evaluated in their careers by Inoue's tailored standards. They will be judged according to their objective abilities, and it probably follows that if they fail to meet those objective standards, the standards themselves will be labeled as racist.

There's another very dangerous bit of academic nonsense happening, this time at the K-12 level of education. One America News Network anchor interviewed Mary Clare Amselem, education specialist at the Heritage Foundation, about the California Department of Education's proposed ethnic studies curriculum. The proposed ethnic studies curriculum would teach children that capitalism and father figures are racist.

The Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum also includes gross anti-Israel bias and teaches about a Palestinian-led anti-Israel initiative called Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. The curriculum also has students study issues of police brutality and asks teachers to find incidents of bias by police in their own communities. According to an article by Shelby Talcott in The Stream, California's proposed curriculum called for students to study lawmakers such as Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, both of whom have supported the BDS movement and have been accused of anti-Semitic rhetoric.

The proposed ethnic studies proposal has been removed from the California Department of Education website. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said, "While I am relieved that California made the obvious decision to revisit this wholly misguided proposal, we need to know why and how a blatantly anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, factually inaccurate curriculum made its way through the ranks of California's Department of Education." He added, "This was not simply an oversight -- the California Department of Education's attempt to institutionalize anti-Semitism is not only discriminatory and intolerant, it's dangerous."

Brainwashing our youngsters is a serious matter. The people responsible for the California Department of Education's proposal ought to be summarily fired.

I heard on "talk radio" yesterday that some school has a new rule that even if a student does not hand in a test paper, or gets all answers wrong, they still get a score of 50%. You might say "It's still a failing grade". But averaged-in with some 70%s, it won't be for the year. Anything to get the dunce up and out for a bad teacher.

Actually its corporate and business leaders that took over or educational system, instead of critical thinking educators. All of these alternative learning is corporate in nature and function, that they are replacing public education with.

being that corporate and business is the biggest employers and thus wanted work forces that worked best for their business models. They do NOT want critical thinkers because they ask why or No I won't do that for this reason, etc.

I would like to throw in a little context of why they are doing this. it has to do with the failed no child left behind law for public schools where emotional reasoning is pushed instead of logic. The young generation people coming from system don't think primarily in logic. they think in emotional reasoning as replacing or trumping logic and facts.

"I feel like that gun is more dangerous than others so if we get rid of them we will be safer." This is NOT about left or right thinking. this is about lack of critical thinking. our no children left behind crowd have difficulty with critical thinking because they were taught to emotionally reason. This is not the lefts doing because it was corporate and business leaders who took control of the education system and wanted drones to fill their working ranks that did not question and ONLY follow instructions regardless of personal morals and ethics. (another cog in the machine. ) our educational leadership is not made of educators and teachers as it should be. .

You weren't too far off on the no child left behind initiatives. But to say that corporations are responsible for the dumbing down of the education system is completely off base and reeks of conspiracy theory crap.

NO we don't, this is NOT natural for us, we are taught this by the people around us. We actually naturally communicate through gestures and body language. I should know, due to learning disability and hearing loss. language did not come easy to me.

If what this person claimed was fact then we would all be speaking the same language and thinking alike. We analyze communicate and learn through trial and error. we teach others what we learned eventually language came as a means to share that.

so anyone want to stick hand in fire? How did we learn not to do that? trial and error. and gestures taught to us by parents.

His way of thinking is we would be able to speak at birth. being language is the foundation.
Chomsky is right, though. You're incorrect. It appears that you're making an assessment way out of context based on a short, very limited insight by a linguist. Of which you and everyone else on this forum are not.

Go read more about it and get an education about it before making such an assessment. The Stuff of Thought by Steven Pinker would be a good start, assuming you can understand his work.

Dude look who is sitting in the upper echelons. of the education. the states take their orders, in order to have uniform educational system for the country, its in DC etc that hands down guidelines for the states to follow. the states have to comply with the feds in order to pay for public education. Since the feds are who pay for public education. THe business and corporate leaders fill almost all of those positions not educators. THus no child left behind was brain child of corporate leaders and business leaders. BASED on who occupied those positions. THe teachers on the ground DO NOT get to decide curriculum. They get fired when they don't follow the guidlines of the feds education leadership.

I am parroting the info by the people on the inside of this issue the teachers etc who's business it is to know who their bosses are. The people at the top are NOT educators they are business leaders and corporate leaders who either left their business or do it in parallel with their business. in order to control the direction of training where they started with what will our end product be thus the drones that fit in the cog. they wanted people who did not think for themselves and follow orders. etc. Constantly doing test teaches you to follow orders without question. And prevents you from learning the skills of critical thinking. because its about teaching you to follow instructions.

I can not locate the list now, but I actually saw a list of education leaders that set the guidelines for the states and who they were and are. Most if not all have ZERO educator back grounds. They all have business and corporate backgrounds and either ran major businesses or still do. Their after grade 12 education had nothing to do with educating people to think critically.

I am not sure we are even on the same page. But I do know the lower teer positions at state level and lower answer to the fed educational leadership the left CAN"T control education . they get fired for deviating from federal standards by their bosses at federal level. If they don't comply. The left can try all they want but it doesn't do them any good without controlling the top leadership at the federal level which is controlled by corporate and business leaders. .

I been following this issue for the last 20 years or longer. especially the portion governed by the rehabilitation act of 1974. which also covered where education was going in general , who in leadership and how it impacted that law and how we are educated. who in leadership was important because if certain types of people got in that law would be torn apart. And severely impacted the education of folks like myself.

A bit about Noam Chomsky. You decide if you want to take his "slanted" advice: Noam Chomsky describes himself as a libertarian socialist, a sympathizer of anarcho-syndicalism, and is considered to be a key intellectual figure within the left-wing of politics of the United States.

Anacho-syndicalism? Is he is a social anarchist, that wants unions to be organized? That is what I am getting from reading at libcom.org.

Well that explains a lot, since Noam Chomsky is a loon. He has videos on YouTube where he yammers on for an hour at a time.

Yes, that is true, in a basic sense, and humans universally use language. But the syntax rules must be laid out by each language, and taught to the speakers.
It does not just fall out of the sky, and hit them on the head. There is a school of idoicy that thinks that the kids can just find their way, and they can't.

“I’ll quote a bad author if the line is good.” --Seneca

We forget when we dogmatically dismiss the comments of someone just because he doesn't share our ideologies:

- Granted, we can seek wisdom elsewhere as a matter of preference but when we stumble on a good thought, does it matter that it came from a loon?

- We should always understand the thoughts and comments of those to whom we are opposed. It gives us an edge and we move on with that advantage permanently.

Our Public High School system inflates the grades and "passes them on out" into society. Been doing this for decades. probably 40 years. How long have we been hearing of Freshman college students having to take :remedial classes" just to get a toe-hold in a college or university?

A professor on Tucker Carlson's program was tasked to evaluate post-graduation high school students academic performances in a school district, maybe in New York or Massachusetts. His findings were that none of the graduated students showed any "proficiency" above 25% in any of the subjects or areas examined. He cited 18 to 24 percent proficiency in math, English, reading, any history, civics and government, any sciences, play-doh-rolling, you name it. This is our American youth in too many instances.

For far too many of our teens, the American Public School System is a scam and a criminal organization. PERIOD.
