Simple question about carrying in public: if some psycho has the element of surprise and decides to target you and open fire on you in public, is there any way to effectively defend against this? It seems you would probably not have the time/composure to either draw your weapon or get to cover in time to make a difference.
This is a big reason why its better to conceal carry rather then open carry. A neer do well with a gun and evil intent is far more likely to target someone open carrying as they would see that person as a direct threat.
I'm all for avoiding problem areas but it's the non-problem areas where you'll get complacent and let your guard down and likely to get in trouble. That would include places part of your daily routine where the odds are if trouble finds you it may be where you least expect it. I'm all for being aware of your surroundings but it only goes so far. I don't know all the facts but somebody got the drop on a combat veteran Navy Seal at a gun range. A decorated sniper trained to observe. We all know the Chris Kyle story.
So to answer the OP's question: Probably not a whole lot.
I googled that. As I understand, it is the study of how a criminal would choose his/her victim (avoiding the situation in the first place). Any recommended literature on that?
if you are a carrier.....then you will act/react accordingly as you see fit......and it will depend on multiple factors as to what actions will be taken.....
if you are not a carrier and are fishing here.....you will never understand until you take the responsibility for yourself as a gun carrier.....then you will know your limitations and capabilities.....which may be different from the next carrier....
not everyone will respond the same, use the same tactics, or have the same capabilities.....
we can "what if" the scenario all day long changing factors and responses.....but the main thing is at least as a carrier, you decide if you are going to be a victim or not. Snow flakes, liberals, communists, socialists, and democrats have already accepted they will be victims regardless of the circumstances....
You cant defend against all threats.
A surprise attack, like getting back shot in a public place is almost impossible.
I do the best i can to reduce the odds.
Life can be unpredictable and sometimes dangerous, but that is what makes it interesting.
You posted a what if scenario and no one will be able to tell you the right reply. You only said very little bout the encounter. There are many variables you left out not saying if they would play in favor or against, suvh is the norm with "what if" scenarios. Fact is no one knows unless they are put / thrusted into this. Each will be different. Best you can do is be aware of your surroundings and spend the money to get more training with your firearm.
EDIT: Your "what if" scenario is all one huge IF one is ever to be in such situation. The world doesn't follow the movies and the movies are just movies. If you look to the actual shooting homicides you will see there is no huge "mass shooting epidemic" (love these titles the left make up) here in America like the news media and politicians promotes. It only seems that way because politicians and media keep it in the news for their agenda. Lets not forget the number indicating what is a mass shooting was lowered to include more shootings to be labeled "mass shootings" during the kenyan years.
a lot will depend on the relative skill and abilities of your attacker. It helps if you have a good idea of how to exploit conditions in your favor. It also helps if you have a measure of luck.
Badguys will often count on their victim being ( morally, legally and ethically conflicted about how to respond and whether or not to fight. It can help if you have processed these thing ahead of time and come to terms with exactly what you are willing to do. Make a plan so that you can potentially eliminate some mental steps which cost you critical seconds.
If you do construct a plan, make sure it lines up with the law in regards to use of force and self defense.
