I've worked 30+ years in IT, and seen just about everything. Most changes are usually unnecessary, and bought about by people who either want something they are familiar with (instead of learning an already established system), or they are trying to "justify" why they are being paid.

A big part of the move is for the future of the site. We are using old software here that is no longer supported by it's developer, which means if/when something major were to break, there wouldn't be much we could do. Better to make the move when things haven't already been lost. The new software is based in Xenforo, but it's one that we custom built with that software's developer, and it's one where we have full access to alter and repair without needing to rely on outside support

Good to hear. I didn't like the look of what I saw, but if you're going to tweak it to suit your "audience", that's good.

When is the swap over going to take place? We went through a swap from Phpb to Xenfro of a forum I was one of the admins on and it was a learning curve for us. The end out come was good for both us and the users.
