I won't cut a barrel to less than 20 inches. Just keep in mind, you will have a cylinder bore barrel after you cut it, unless you have choke mandrels in the right guage and are really good with a peen .

I agree that buying a shorter barrel is the best option, then going to a gunsmith for a clean professional cut, followed by doing it yourself as the last option, unless you're some kind of a machinist.
I`m in the same boat with you coach. I know my limitations and other than being fairly decent with a cutting torch, I am no machinist. I would just get a shoter barrel or a gun with what you need unless you are doing it to an old beater. Even then I would let a machinist do it but that`s just me.

I'm in the process of building / modifying an old Mod 870L into a home defense gun. My 'smith recommends 19". That works great with the extended mag I installed and leaves no question as to legality.

Like Popeye says, ALWAYS give at least an eight to a quarter-inch to be on the safe side.

I have probably cut down in excess of a thousand shotgun barrels. You are cutting a piece of pipe to a desired length. This is not brain surgery. This barely qualifies a gun smithing. There is only one caveat. Do not attempt to cut down a vent rib barrel if you are not adept at silver soldering.

    Here's how to do it.

Get yourself a yard (36") of 1/4" diameter rod. Close the shotgun breech. Drop the rod down the barrel. Mark the rod at the end of the barrel's muzzle. Remove the rod. Measure from the end of the rod to the mark. Measure again. Same measurement? This is the exact length of your shotgun barrel.

Let's assume that you have an old fixed choke hunting shotgun, as these can be had very inexpensively on the used market, with a 30" barrel. A 30" barrel gives you 12" to play with. Since this is the first barrel you have cut down, let's cut it to 19". Measure from the muzzle down the barrel exactly 11". Mark the barrel. Measure again. Mark the barrel. Same distance? This is where you will cut.

Extend your marks all around the barrel. This is easiest and most accurately done with a tubing cutter [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] . Measure from the muzzle to your mark. Is it 11"? If so you are ready to begin cutting.

The full circumference mark you made on the barrel will be of vital assistance in making a square and accurate cut. Properly set the blade tension on your band saw or hacksaw. Follow your mark and take your time. You now have a 19" shotgun barrel with a rough muzzle. Fine flat files, fine rattailed files and sandpaper (plus time) will cure this roughness. A touchup black pen (plus time) will darken the new-cut brightness.

Since this is a short range weapon, a front bead is unnecessary unless you desire to do more damage when running the barrel in and out of the BG's anal orifice.
