Default Need some advice on my new Handgun

Hi All - new here and I went through some threads looking for answers before I posted. I shot for years in 22 small bore competitions but have never owned or shot a handgun. Now that Jersey is most likely turning into a Sanctuary State I have changed my mind and I am getting a handgun. Fortunately, a good friend of mine is a Lt on my local police force and is pushing my application through so I don't have to wait the standard 4-6 months which I think is a joke when other states they do on the spot fed background check before a purchase.

Anyhow - I have been doing some research - I am a tall guy 6'4 at 245 so a small revolver or a small concealed weapon I think wouldn't be a good fit for me since my hands are larger. I have been putting my sites on the Glock 17 Gen 4 or 5 because I believe it's more a full-size handgun with a little less recoil if I decide to teach my wife to shoot it. Plus the aftermarket add-ons I could do if I wanted to, the Glock seems to have an abundance of choices.

Do you think this a good choice? Is there something else for all of you that have far more experience than me would suggest for me to look at?

Also, any suggestions as to a brand of ammunition would also be appreciated?

Thank you all for your time and your expertise.
    Paul

Get yourself (and your wife) to a shooting range that rents guns (if they still exist in NJ). Shoot as many full sized pistols, in as many different calibers, as you can.

Purchasing a handgun based solely on reviews, pictures and write-ups is akin to purchasing an automobile without a test drive.

If I could carry i'd seriously consider the Ruger LCR you can shoot 38 Spl and 357 mag with it but as mentioned, "Try" is the best way to choose

It is my understanding that it is extremely hard to get a CCP in New Jersey. So, you might want to consider a full size handgun at first. Then, if and when you do get a CCP you could shop around for a personal carry weapon.

looking at NJ restrictions......i guess i would have to be careful with the mags as nothing allowed to be carried over 15 rds........and i would have to be careful with the ammo as HP carried in public is out-lawed for concealed carry.

so......i would look larger caliber with the HP restrictions and not so much at capacity.....for a bit larger gun any of the 44 special revolvers offered.....Charter, Ruger, Smith, etc....and i would be looking at at a 1911 45 or a Springfield XD 45

i think the springfield xd is one of the better polymer 45 acp guns out there.

^^^ This, You're about one notch above Canada and we CAN'T carry here. If things continue the way they are it'll be a long while before you're a "free" carry state, so you might as well get range guns like we do till things get better

With the trouble you have to go through to buy a pistol, in NJ, you're buying a glock?
Is it the plastic, the ugly, or the reputation(i.e. "glock leg syndrome") that's attractive
    to you?

You've got a market filled with great pistols, FNs, 1911s, Berettas, Sigs, GP35s, S&W GEN 3s,
Rugers, CZs, Rex Zeros, & Walthers, for starters. Get something that looks nice, and fits well in your hand.

    For 9X19MM, I prefer the S&B 115 GR. FMJ.

The pick would be up to you to see which fits you better. Like Popeye pointed out, go to a range which rents firearms. See which would be better in shooting and ergonomics for you. We r only able to suggest and most suggestions you might not like, if you purchase one of them.
My suggestion would be if you're looking for 9mm in s Glock 17 size, some other firearms to look at would be the CZ-75 or the HK VP9. Even a light weight 1911 in 9mm. Colt, Springfield and Dan Wesson/CZ make good lightweight 9mm 1911. Lots of others out there, these would be the firearms I would suggest for you to look into. Its up to you which firearm out there you would like and would be able to handle and carry. What one likes or suggests may not be for some other. Good luck and have fun!
