    Default New Guns.. Need Advice

Hello all, i recently inherited a few guns which i am not completely familiar with and am not having great luck on the internet trying to find what i am looking for... grrr... so i was hoping you could help me out.

First gun is a Remington 6mm Woodsmaster model 742. my question to you is what caliber gun is this? is at a 30.06? what hunting is best suited for this gun.

Second gun is a Remington model 700 223. Same thing... what caliber is this gun, and what type of hunting is recommended for this gun.

Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.

Your Remington Model 742 is chambered in 6mm Remington. It is a rather difficult round to find factory loaded anymore.

Your Remington Model 700 is chambered in .223 Remington. This is commonly commercially loaded ammunition.

Not too familiar with the 6mm as its not very common. The 223 is what majority of ar15's shoot though most shoot the higher pressure 5.56 version. 223 is very common though likely a little hard to find currently. As far as hunting goes 223 is great for coyotes and smaller game. A little on the light/ unethical side for deer and in WA state at least not a legal caliber for deer hunting because of that. 223 is also one of my favorite target shooting calibers. A 700 in 223 is a pretty desirable gun IMO at least.

Hey highboy...just testing my old memory..."without looking anything up etc "...but
from old post memory...in WA. state...

You can still use .22 or rim ( or mag? ) on cougar...? Or was it .22 center on those too..?

And..in some way of keeping "caliber" specific with rifles etc..legally..can't you use
    a "handgun"....22 center up....? for bear/elk/deer..? meaning technically a .32 or
    even a .25...? vi a handgun..or is my memory crocked...as usual..?

Minimum 24 caliber or 6mm centerfire from a rifle or handgun for big game. Handgun limits the same but a minimum barrel length of 4 inches.

I'm pretty sure that cougar falls into big game as well.

Hell not bad for a Texan. I couldn't even start to list any of your hunting regs.

iI'm pretty sure I've heard people on here say they can hunt deer with 223 though I might be mistaken on that.

No...just "used" to have a good photo memory..and I got to thinking that
I recalled another NW member on the "above 24" etc...and that technically or
legally...you could take a bear with .32 handgun...? And..maybe was longer ago..
    a cougar with .22 mag..?

Yes..in Texas ( i still believe )...ANY center fired RIFLE round...fair game (pun intended)..
    also believe...and..heck..even the 17 Remington..or...22 Hornet legal...most go above .243
or used to...I haven't hunted in years....give my "kill machine" model 70 25/06 to nephew
every year since 97 I guess...he has always scored with it...I think we have some bigger
now thru state inbringing....but our white tails are known for small size..

    Not in TX...but I used to read a guy on a forum....very old dude...had got over 100
dear (to eat ) in his life...all with ear shots....made me think ( I wouldnt unless hungry etc )
just how many deer or other...have been taken in this country since the .22 came into
    being....?

Anyway...yes...223 or 5.56 very common here....my goodness...my last ancient hunt...
borrowed Rem .35 from unk.....nice rifle...
