    Default Rebarrel advise

I currently have a Remington 700 chambered in 7mm RUM with a Nikon 2-10 glass. Ammo is becoming hard to find and to get an accurate load. Toying with the idea of a “simple” rebarrel job to a different caliber without a bunch of bolt work/etc. i’m ok with unique but i want something i can get ammo for as well. I reload some but also do factory ammo when i dont have time to load. I would like to have that gun set up for medium/longish range on heavier animals.

Anyways, opinions on calibers for a Rebarrel? 300? 338? Any? Also i dont have much exerience in custom so would you do a ‘blank’ or can you get a fully ready barrel? Thanks

    I fear you're somewhat limited.

Remington Ultra Magnum & Short Ultra Magnum cartridges are based on the .404 Jeffery case. As are the Winchester Short Magnum and Super Short Magnum cartridges. Dakota Arms also uses the .404 Jeffery as a 'base cartridge' for their proprietary calibers (excpt for their .450). Nosler uses the .404 Jeffery as a starting point for some of its proprietary calibers.

Easy commercial loaded ammo availability will be a problem with all of these.

Popeye, i agree about being limited. All the 338’s aren’t exactly super common. Might just get set up for reloading the RUM.

Found a “pre fit” barrel from ‘X-Caliber’ in 300 win mag but not sure if the bolt would have to be worked on. Anyone ever use pre fit barrels and/or have experience with X-Caliber?

'Bolt work' will be necessary with any cartridge other than the ones I mentioned.

Reloading is probably your best and least expensive option.

300 wsm will stick around and, of the 404 Jeffery based cases, is the one for which loaded ammo is most likely to be found. Having said that, none of them have a bright and shining future.

Suggest you consider moving that rifle on and buying another chambered in a more readily available cartridge.

The 7RUM is a magnum bolt face, I would be looking at a 300wm, 7mag or 300wsm....plenty of factory offering for those cartridges and a lot longer barrel life than a 7RUM.....of all the WSM cases the 300WSM has a great following with benchrest shooters and Fclass shooters not to mention hunters....The 270wsm and 7WSM not so much.
