    Whompuss,
By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard around the world!

First Stanza of the The Concord Hymn
    - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"When my country, into which I had just set my foot, was set on fire about my ears, it was time to stir. It was time for every man to stir." - Thomas Paine

One of "them". I love "them", great for a good laugh.
I kind-of quit wearing my gun shirts out in public, 'cause of a little kid saying something about "that lady likes guns, why?" I didn't have a chance to answer, but there was something in the kids voice that bothered me. Maybe daddy got killed in Iraq or something, I don't know.
I do however wear them around the house, yard, and let's not forget that bi-weekly trip to Wal-Mart!
I will stand by my right to carry and use a gun in self-defense, I will not stand by anyones right to carry a gun to rob and kill a 78 year old man at the gas station.
Be thankful for what you had yesterday, happy with what you have today, and curious about tomorrow.

I guess I am not polite...but I would have said...

"you know how many innocent people have been murdered by thugs that might still be alive if they had a gun with them"?

    or

"I guess your here to to see the Doctor for your post-Lobotomy check-up"

I run into stuff like that every now and then here in Tucson. One time while in a 7/11 a kid screamed, and I do mean SCREAMED, "Momma, that man has a gun!" The mother, whose name just had to be Buffy, Sky or Fawn looked at me in terror and said, "It is ok he is probably a policeman." I looked at her and said "No, I am not a policeman, don't tell the kid that." I looked at the kid and said, pretty much that everyone with a gun is not bad. Mom, yanked her kid to the back of the store and hid there until I paid for my Big Gulp and left.

As my new saying goes, "You can't fix stupid."

I actually had an experience like this a few years ago, but mine was positive.

Years ago, back before I was married and after I realized that it is not a good idea to date women from Jacksonville, I was headed up to the mountains to go hiking and stopped in to get fuel. I was carrying a S&W Model 25, and a woman came up to me and asked what police agency still carries revolvers. I told her I wasn't a cop, but was interested by her question because I wouldn't have thought that many people would pick up on this. After explaining that NC is an open carry state I found out that her father was a cop, and she was from up north, and she had been fairly active in anti gun stuff, but by the end of our conversation I think she came away from it with a different view on it.

Now I will say that she was pretty educated and seemed to be open to other people's thoughts, which is odd in that group. But it almost seemed as if she started to change her mind.

One thing I have learned over my years with firearms and dealing with the idiots on the other side of things is that we as "gun guys" tend to get defensive and kind of in your face about our rights, and while that is ok, it sometimes pushes those that are on the fence towards the other side, and if we just take the time to explain things in an articulate way we end up doing better.

It is impossible to turn an idiot away from their beliefs, but there are those out there that have not made up their minds, and how we conduct ourselves may very well make their minds up for them.
“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.”

    I absolutely agree with that!
It is far easier to get someone to see your viewpoint, if done so in a calm and respectful manner, than in a defensive and obviously pissed-off way. I always contend that I am an ambassador for all gun owners and need to act in a way that reflects well on all of us.
Of course I'm out of my mind! It's dark and scary in there.... Hidden Content

Ding ding ding. I owe you a beer.

Wow I hope I never meet any of you or I will go broke paying people back with the beers that are owed.

Default How to respond to a liberal

Don't take the bate and sound like a hard a$$. That's what they want to hear. I think it would be wiser to listen respectfully to what they have to say and politely attempt to educate them about the facts. I think you'll get much further with liberal/anti gunners if you calmly and inteligently make your point in a civil conversation. They may not immediatley agree but over time if the progunners present themselves in a proper manner we will get better results and more conversions. A long time ago I read a newspaper editorial written by a typical liberal who was invited to a gun range. He was treated with respect and given the red carpet treatment. He departed the range with a different point of view after learning more facts about gun reality, and admittedly had lots of fun. He probably lost his job by admitting that in his editorial, but at least we converted somebody by using the old "you get more bees with honey" attitude. I often politely offer to take anti gun people shooting. Sometmes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but it's worth a shot. When they ask what do you need a gun for? don't tell them: "to shoot communists like you"! Try to be nice at least at first.

I've had a few polite encounters with folks who are genuinely curious. One was while I was out eating dinner, a woman asked if she could talk to me about it, so I invited her so have a seat and we spoke for over 1/2 hour.

Don't know if she changed her mind, but I do tend to see that some gun owners fit the negative steroetype of someone who is perpetually angry being armed.

I'm not one of them, and anger is no reason to carry a gun.
