Default Vermont Lawmakers Propose Bill to Legalize Prostitution

A bill to legalize adult prostitution in Vermont was recently introduced by female lawmakers in the state’s legislature.

The bill’s [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] read:

This bill proposes to repeal the prostitution laws while retaining felony human trafficking laws that prohibit recruiting, enticing, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a minor for the purpose of commercial sex; patronizing a minor for commercial sex; recruiting, enticing, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining any person through force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of having the person engage in commercial sex; compelling any person through force, fraud, or coercion to engage in commercial sex; and patronizing any person for a commercial sex act who is being compelled through force, fraud, or coercion to engage in a commercial sex.

One of the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Selene Colburn who is a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Progressive, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] she believed decriminalizing so-called “sex work” would offer prostitutes more safety and improve their health.

Colburn also stated that if prostitution were not considered [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] in the state, charges would not be brought against the sex worker or the buyer, the VTDigger reported.

“By driving sex work underground, we’re creating much more dangerous conditions for sex workers. They should feel like they have the protection of police if they need it,” she stated.

However, when the demand for commercial sex increases, it brings with it a rise in human trafficking to meet that demand, according to the Harvard Law and International Development website.

The [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] continued:

Countries with legalized prostitution are associated with higher human trafficking inflows than countries where prostitution is prohibited. The scale effect of legalizing prostitution, i.e. expansion of the market, outweighs the substitution effect, where legal sex workers are favored over illegal workers. On average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows.

In October, a Washington, DC, council committee said there would be no [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] on a bill to decriminalize prostitution in the area after more than 100 people testified for and against it, according to the Washington Blade.

“I don’t think necessarily that there is an appetite to move it forward now,” said Councilmember David Grosso, who introduced the legislation in June.

“I think right now we still have some work to do to garner support to get it moved through the full Council,” he said.

Prior to the meeting, over 200 people [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] an opposition letter to voice their disagreement with the proposed bill.

“What this would do is actually repeal the laws against pimping and pandering, purchasing sex and brothel keeping which we’re concerned would actually fuel exploitation of vulnerable communities,” said Rights4Girls Executive Director Yasmin Vafa.

I don't think this is what they meant by "empower women".

"I don't think this is what they meant by "empower women".

That is EXACTLY what the DEMOCRATS meant. Like Obama vowing to "fundamentally transform" America, or letting you keep your policy and doctor. That was what he said and meant. You just haven't referred to the Unabridged Glossary and Dictionary of The American Left. aka "Dem's Dictionary".

It's similar to "employee empowerment" during the past episodes of "down-sizing", where 2 or 3 employees are laid off and you get to assume their responsibilities and work-load as additions to your own! "Employee-empowerment".

Seems to do a great job in Nevada. many have gone on to college, become successful business women and a few retired as millionaires before they were 30. Along with that, the counties where it is legal benefit from the huge license fees - these help provide more police, fire personnel and equipment as well as fund other necessary services.
The only place where there are kids being dragged into prostitution, where STDs are wide spread, and where it is out of control is in Clark County, Las Vegas, and Washoe Countty which is Reno. -ADDED, both counties where legal prostitution is not allowed.......
Personally, when you regulate like NV, it keeps it out of the main view of folks, there are no underage people working, there is no drug use allowed, they get weekly medical checks, and they cannot practice their trade outside of the brothel.
Imagine how much money and personnel time could be freed up to go after drug dealers, human traffickers, etc that are now wasted busting prostitutes and their johns

The problem is that in Vermont, "hot" is constituted by a girl with some of her own teeth. What "sex workers" in the Kingdom might look like is the stuff of horror movies.

I think that with a professional worker, the product would improve. I woman in my town totally stood behind and wanted a brothel “so that the guys would have leave the good girls alone and have a place to release their frustration “. I never said she was right or wrong. It probably would be too expensive for the average young man. Vermont is quite the conundrum of right and left laws.

So, after a few voluntary endorsements by the usual suspects at NGF, we now hear from the involved opposition:

Prior to the meeting, over 200 people [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] an opposition letter to voice their disagreement with the proposed bill.

“What this would do is actually repeal the laws against pimping and pandering, purchasing sex and brothel keeping which we’re concerned would actually fuel exploitation of vulnerable communities,” said Rights4Girls Executive Director Yasmin Vafa.

I'm for it, as long as they have a provision that says they require reduced fees for poor guys, a section 8 for the poor guy, so to speak.

Like it or not, prostitution exists regardless of laws making it illegal. It is possible that these laws enable 'pimping and pandering'.
Similar quandries are true concerning recreational drugs.

Every guy has paid for sex. Dinners, movies, drinks, and all the way to a house and many years of support a s shelter. Ether way it’s money out of your pocket and you expect something in return even if you don’t realize it. Prostitution is at least an honest transaction. Just taking the transverse opinion.
