Default Bill de Blasio eyes license requirement for bike riders

    September 4, 2019

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is considering requiring bicyclists to be licensed and registered like automobile drivers currently are.

According to a report in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, the mayor also wants to expand the city’s safety regulations, which already have won it a nanny-state reputation, to include requiring Citi Bike renters to wear helmets.

Mr. de Blasio called the idea of forcing cyclists to have licenses and registration a “valid discussion,” the Daily News reported, and added that he also plans a crackdown on cyclists who break traffic laws.

Advocates of bicycling argued that regulating and licensing something discourages it — the opposite of what the city ought to be doing.

“Requiring helmets and bicycle licensing is counterproductive to Vision Zero because they’re a deterrent to cycling,” Joe Cutrufo, spokesman for advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, told the Daily News. “When you discourage people from riding a bike, fewer people will do it, and the safest cities in the world for riding a bike are the cities where there are the most cyclists.

Council Speaker Corey Johnson wrote on Twitter that “we need to be encouraging cycling, not creating obstacles.” “These ideas won’t help us increase bike riding in NYC,” he wrote.

Because the folks can't afford gas or even a car! When a micro subcompact costs about $25K and gas is $7/gallon, buses, trains, and bikes make sense; especially when most folks live within the city and have access to those options like they do in Europe

City Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Queens) [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] that would require all adult cyclists in NYC get licenses and register their bicycles,

some worried that the legislation didn't go far enough.

"the annual registration of personal bicycles and provides for a license plate fee of twenty-five dollars for the first year and five dollars for every year thereafter."
To get the license plate, cyclists would need to get their bicycles inspected to make sure they "conform to the lamp and equipment requirements."
A second bill would require every commercial cyclist in the state to carry identification and have insurance; their initial registration fee would be $50.

DenDekker estimates that the law would generate an estimated $1,875,000 for the state of New York; as well as recurring annual revenue of $375,000.

And yet he isn't bantering for a voter registration and ID........no money in that when you already own the city.

Become more familiar with the term and practice of "Lane Diet". Local politicians pit motorists against bicyclists by removing "car traffic lanes" (maintained with gasoline taxes) and designating them as "bicycle lanes ONLY". Then when the Lycra-pantied bicyclists increase in appreciable numbers, the politicians will levy taxes on them with licensing and registrations and inspections, just like the car owners. BUT.......the car owners still pay local gasoline taxes for road maintenance.

Motorists lose traffic lanes, still pay for them and the ill will betweem car drivers and bicyclists becomes dangerous. We are not China, Asia or Europe. But our elite Liberal politicians wish we were more like Europe.

Sort of off topic. One day I was following a lifted Dodge 2500 headed to the coast. Nice drive with a gradual uphill climb and then a pretty good downhill to the coast. It must have been a bike fun day as the road was lined with spandex encrusted people with plastic pointy helmets. I noticed this Dodge guy slowing down so I did too. When we got near a group of 4-5 bike guys the truck nailed it and covered them in thick diesel smoke. I knew what he was doing so I increased my space cushion and sure enough, the next group appeared, he let off, loaded up the barrels and nailed it. When I went by I couldn't see the bike dudes. He did this all the way to the coast.
Poor bikers out for a nice ride.

Europe is a LOT more civilized however. Most Euro countries with a largely homogeneous population do not have the hatred, race issues, crime etc. that we have here.

Maybe he got tired of "sharing the road" with folks who take up too much space on the road.Where I live, there are a LOT of country two lane roads, some of which have 55 and 65 mph and ZERO bike lane or shoulder - IMO, while scenic and nice, folks riding bikes are seriously taking risks as they have nowhere to go. Someone coming around a corner at that speed, if faced with an oncoming vehicle, has no choice but to stay in the lane and (hopefully) slam on the brakes to stop. Sometimes these folks are their own worst enemies with the way they ride.
