Default $15 minimum wage bill headed to House floor

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] are expected to bring a bill to raise the federal [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to $15 per hour to the House floor on Thursday.

The legislation would increase the national minimum pay rate to $15 per hour over the course of six years through scheduled annual increases. It has more than 180 co-sponsors, including support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, unchanged since 2009.

Originally, the legislation had aimed to hit the $15 per hour target in five years, but the timeline has been stretched slightly to increase the bill’s chances of passing.

Some Democrats have expressed concern that broadly increasing the federal minimum wage would have differing effects among communities across the country, specifically between rural and urban areas.

As a result, Democratic Reps. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., and Tom O'Halleran, D-Ariz., have proposed an amendment to the legislation that would require a Government Accountability Office (GAO) analysis of the economic and employment impacts of the first two scheduled wage increases. After that, Congress would decide on how to proceed toward the ultimate $15 per hour goal.

That amendment is expected to pass.

If approved in the House, the legislation would need to be passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Trump.

Republican leadership has said the minimum wage hike would be “devastating” for middle-class families, citing research from the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO report found that the Democrats’ bill would boost wages for about 17 million people – but it would also reduce business income, raise consumer prices and reduce the nation’s output. Overall, the CBO said the move would reduce real family income by about $9 billion in 2025 – or 0.1 percent. Those effects, however, would be felt differently depending on where families fall on the income spectrum. Job losses were estimated at a median 1.3 million, though the range could extend as high as 3.7 million.

“Think about that, that’s the entire state of Oklahoma losing their job,” Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., said on Capitol Hill last week. “The CBO report that came out should be alarming to everybody in America who believes in trying to become part of the middle class.”

Not all conservatives are opposed to bigger paychecks, however, though they typically don’t support a federal mandate.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, for example, argued against having the federal government set the national minimum wage since conditions vary meaningfully among states.

“The federal government shouldn’t have jurisdiction over the states anyway in a matter like this,” Kudlow told FOX Business in November 2018. "The conditions are different in these states, the cost of living is different, the state of business is different.”

A number of states and cities – including New Jersey and Oregon – raised their minimum wages in July.

Meanwhile, lawmakers are also scrambling to reach an agreement to lift the debt ceiling before a deadline the U.S. government is expected to hit in early September. Congress is on recess for most of August, therefore the deal largely needs to be put forward by the end of next week. However, Pelosi has said the Democrats won’t sign a deal to increase the spending limit unless other spending terms are also agreed upon.

    Idiots.

All that will do is lead to rampant inflation, job loss, and drive the cost up for everyone on everything. Maybe they should raise social security at the same rate of increase.

These morons never learn. Someone who can't read or write and whose skill sets top out at dropping the fry basket into the oil at McDonald's does not DESERVE $30/year when there are college grads in nursing, LEOs, etc. not making that much. You want $30K/year? Go get some education, learn how to enunciate, and dress accordingly.

Minimum wage was designed for entry level positions and teens to gain experience.
You are not supposed to spend your life there.
Educate yourself, learn a trade, that is the American dream.
When I was a kid my first job was minimum wage $1.65 hr.
Worked my way through high school and college with it.
    Never dreamed to stay there.
Now folks want to do simple tasks and make a living. have a family and buy a house.
If you cannot handle capitalism and freedom.
    TRY ANOTHER COUNTRY.

"Gimmee Dat" and his cronies don't want to put in any effort - all part of the Left's plan for socialism - get everyone too stupid to do anything and promise them "free stuff" and an easy check - just keep voting us into power and "we'll take care of you"

If those morons saw that the Nazi Party (aka Democratic Socialists), did too folks, they might change their tune.

Indeed. Working the "counter" at Wendy's for going on 10 years doesn't seem like a way to spend a working life. Yet, I see two girls at our local Wendy's who have been there for at least 10 years now. However, upon further consideration, becoming proficient in the duties of every crew-position behind the counter does take time and an applied attitude to do the tasks reliably and proficiently. But still. 10 years?

It goes to expectations and thresholds, I suppose.

A $15 an hour minimum wage is no longer necessary. The O-Hole is no longer President. There are now good paying jobs going begging.

Just heard in the news that Bernie Sanders campaign workers are demanding that he pay them at least the $15.00 hr.
Campaign is refusing says that they pay what the other campaigns pay.

I think it was like $3.10 or so when i started working and i couldn't support myself then either. Of course i was a dish washer in high school. The problem is these people want to be dishwashers their whole life and drive brand new cars and pay a mortgage.

Which is a lifestyle they could afford if only those cheap-assed employers would pay them a "Livable Wage". Is that so hard, or too much to ask?
