The only people in possession of 4473 forms are the gun shops where the guns were purchased. The exceptions are the ones that have gone out of business and have turned in their forms. Some places do the forms electronically and could probably be searched easily but most still do the paper forms that would need to be searched through in every guns store in every state. There are a estimated 300 millions(which i think is low) guns and i bet close to half of those have been sold since the inception of the 4473 form. My dad had a very small shop and was in business for a little over 20 years and when we turned in his forms it was almost a PU truck load of boxes. Any idea how long that would take just to search his forms let alone the other 50,000+ gun shops in the U.S.?

IF, and that's a big if they haven't already started keeping note on their end, I'll bet they start.

The ATF issues Firearms Trace Request to FFLs all the time. The request form already has the person who purchased it, the date they purchased it and the make and model of the weapon. Now maybe that's because the person who bought it is the one that reported it lost or stolen.. who knows..

When it becomes time to hide your firearms and their accessories from the government it is then past time to use them against the government.

in those cases they typically have the gun in hand and are using the serial number to back track to the buyer. A different story to determine everything someone has bought then try to track what might have been done in private sales on top of it

Yes and they do that by having the serial number, contacting the manufacturer to see which distributor it went to. Then from the they find out which gun shop it went to and then the gun shop has to search through lots of forms to find it but they have a starting point with dates.

Keep notes? When you buy a gun and they process the 4473 all they(ATF) get is handgun or long gun. They don't know if it's a single shot 22 derringer or a Barret 50BMG, for that info they need the form in hand. We're talking searching at least 100 million forms looking for several million guns. With private sales and the "gun show loophole:" who knows where they are now. Even in states like NY where they have mandatory background checks anything bought and sold before that law could be long gone....or in a false wall.
