Default Surcharges for using credit/debit card???

A lot of restaurants around here have started adding a surcharge for credit/debit card patrons. Some charge a flat fee, while others are charging a percentage. Since NGF membership is a well represented cross-section of the nation, I thought I would ask y'all if this is occurring in your neck of the woods???

Not where I am, but local gov't adds a % fee as do most online gun dealers. Typically about 2.5-3% which is what the credit card companies charge them as a fee.
Simple, carry cash and tip in cash so the waiter/tress gets their full share.

I haven't seen anything like this in upstate NY. Curious - were you aware of this added surcharge BEFORE you made your purchase or was the surcharge a surprise when you got the bill?

To all on these forums who've served - a big THANK YOU!!!

There are usually a sign at the register, which means you are committed to make the purchase one way or another.

I have not seen any charges. I charge everything. I use a couple of cash back cards getting a couple percent back. I got in trouble before with credit cards so I pay them all off several times a month so pay no interest and have no minimum payment and try to keep a zero balance.

Some places it's illegal to charge more for plastic so to circumvent that they give you a cash discount.

I haven’t seen anything like that here in Jersey except for gas. They charge about .10 a gallon more for credit/debit and only a few don’t. Some Chinese restaurants say you have to spend a minimum of $10. Or they will charge you .50 more for the card. I’m not sure if it’s legal or if the card companies approve of the practice.
