NG is easier on the equipment and there's no fly ash to dispose of afterwards, no baghouses and scrubbers that require a LOT of maintenance; no railroad tracks, no miles of conveyor belts to ball mills and crushers. NG turbines are basically like really big jet engines in a sense. As long as the supply is reliable, they do a good job.

Here is the Shamokin dam plant. The Susquehanna river goes by it. I often said why not go hydroelectric?

Because you need drop to make it work; the water has to have a serious gravity fed drop to spin the hydro turbines.

So why did they shutter it? Was it because they would have had to add expensive scrubbers and bag houses to meet emissions?

Im not sure why. There was talk about converting the other plants in the area while Obama was in. But since Trump won I have not heard anything about them converting.

Well, BHO was against coal because that and fracking would make us energy independent.
SOME older coal units, especially those burning cheap coal like lignite, ARE nasty polluters -used to see that brown plume rolling across the ND prairie from the units nearby. Most baghouse technology will do as good a job as adding very expensive scrubber units.

I think I know "why no hydro."

We'll need a dam. Upstream of the dam, we'll create a man-made lake because we're gonna block the water flow.

Downstream will become a trickle. That difference in height between lake and stream gives us potential energy that can be converted to kinetic energy down at the bottom of the dam as we allow water to turn turbines.

    Of course, problems abound.

People living upstream will lose property to the lake.

People downstream will lose their river. If farmers are tapping that river for irrigation now, or if there's river traffic involving large vessels, all that sinks (see what I did there).

It's [natural gas power plant under construction nearby] easier on the environment, too. There's no coal ash to deal with, it uses less than 5 percent of the water for cooling than the coal plant used, and it emits less pollution. Here's the real kicker: The new gas plant will produce more than twice as much electricity as the old coal plant — enough to power about a million homes.

There is a dam before the plant. Nice boating area. But yeah its not a big drop off kind.
