Sheriff: Jewelry store restricts on-duty deputy from picking up engagement ring because he was armed

STATESVILLE, N.C. – A local Sheriff's Office took to social media Wednesday afternoon after a Statesville jewelry store allegedly refused to allow an on-duty Iredell County Sheriff's Office deputy to enter their store to pick up his engagement ring because he was armed.

The Sheriff's Office said they were "deeply saddened" by the situation that unfolded at Kay Jewelers, located at 187 Turnersburg Highway.

In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Darren Campbell, said the uniformed deputy, while on his lunch break, was notified that the engagement ring he had purchased for his upcoming wedding proposal had been sized and was ready for him to pick up at the store.

"The deputy took his meal break to pick up the ring and was met at the door by the store manager, who informed him he was not allowed to wear his service weapon while on their premises," the post reads.

Authorities said the deputy informed the manager he was in uniform and his marked patrol car was in the parking lot and it would be a violation of policy for him to remove his service weapon while in uniform.

The Sheriff's Office said the policy is in place for not only the safety of the deputy but the general public as well.

The post further reported, "The manager stated our deputy would need to return to the store at a different time when he was not armed."

The Sheriff's Office said the deputy left the store without the ring he had purchased.

"The reaction our deputy encountered is very difficult for us to comprehend, and we earnestly hope situations such as these are few and are diminishing," the Sheriff's Office wrote in the post.

Campbell said he has attempted to contact the store's corporate office numerous times but has not yet received a direct response.

A company spokesperson for Kay Jewelers, David Bouffard, responded to the Sheriff's Office's post, stating that the company is "reaching out to the customer and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office to sincerely apologize for the mishandling of this matter."

The company further stated, "We have tremendous respect for law enforcement, and we thank the Office for bringing this to our attention. We will be sure to reinforce store training regarding our firearm policy with specific regard to uniformed law enforcement."
:sosp: Apparently, the store manager is a special kind of stupid. :popcorn2:

Hmmm. A manager of a national chain store allowing their personal prejudices to override store policy. Once upon a time that was a firing offense.

I saw a police cruiser in front of walmart the other day (and I mean "in front of the doors") and when I came in the lady officer was waiting in line with a bra in her hand

Those folks, like the one in this story, DO get lunch breaks.

I'm thinking if that Kay's get robbed, the sheriffs should take their sweet time responding - if at all.

Hmmmm? I wonder.......? If a legal CC would have experienced the same thing, if Kay's would have responded the same. I'm thinking, No. The Peon citizenry get denied all sorts of Rights every day, or risk arrest by the armed constibulary.

I am a strong supporter of law enforcement, but, I don't think there would have been the same reaction from the SO or Kay's had Joe Citizen had the same issue.

Well, like it has been discussed in other treads of this forum, it is private property and they can have whatever regulation they want, but, it is my money and I will expend it were I am welcome with my legally concealed weapon.

Kay's, Jareds and several others are ALL owned by the same parent corporation so when you see them in the same mall, the corporation is getting your money one way or another.

Signet Jewelers Limited owns Kay Jewelers, Jared Galleria of Jewelry, Zales, H. Samuel, Ernest Jones, Peoples, Piercing Pagoda and several regional brands like Osterman Jeweler and Rogers Jewelers,

CC carriers would not have this problem.......concealed is out of sight/out of mind and an excellent way to avoid this pc nonsense.

the officer was on his designated lunch break.....he is good to go.

this manager is no different than the idiots who go after MAGA hats, disrupt hunts, and chain themselves to trees....an ultra left pc agenda.

and finally.....i can not resist...
