For security on the cheap, ( Security is worth what you pay for it. ) and since you have no kids you can work this.

If you are still friendly with your parents then tell them the situation and ask them if it would be OK to leave the AR and the .22 where they have been. Sure its a pain to have to go to their house to pick them up to go shooting but it would be a bigger pain to have to fill out the forms if they get stolen. Also one more illegal AR on the streets is one more too many.

This option also applies to friends who shoot. Ask them for some safe room.

If neither is workable, store them in the last place a common thug would look. By common thug I mean a someone who just breaks in not looking for anything but looking to take anything that might have a value. They won't look in the cabinet under the kitchen sink, or they might but for sure they will look in the bedroom closet and under the bed.

Since you can not bolt anything down if you use any sort of lock box you will also loose your lock box. That is guaranteed to go with them when they leave. People only use them for valuables and one that is not bolted down will look like a payday to the thief. Any locked box not bolted down that weighs less than < shrug > 200 pounds will not be there after the robbery.

Use camouflage. Keep your hand guns in a empty box of tampons under the bathroom sink. They are not going to take the time to search every box. Yes you are a guy. Guys have girlfriends. Remember this only works on thugs that have not been watching you. Put some of you moms or sisters empty or nearly empty perfume bottles around where they can be seen. While thugs are not the brightest people they know that 2+2=4. Perfume bottles + tampon boxes = girlfriend.

For the long guns, under the couch is better than in a closet or under a bed. Put them in a garbage bag to protect them from dust. Don't leave gun stuff laying around. Nothing that would tell them that if they searched just a little more they might find something. Remember that whole 2+2 thing? It works against you too. Ammo boxes + Gun magazines = I need to look more.

Then cross your fingers. I would also keep a list of serial numbers make and model of each gun. So that if you do loose them the police have some sort of identification for the fire arms. Do this even if you have an unbreakable safe.

These are not good ideas. These are just next best to leaving them leaning in the corner. It is just all you can do at this time.

You best bet is secrecy. No one needs to know you own guns. When moving in for Gods sake don't just carry them in. Hide them.

If you're looking for something cheap i would get a stack on cabinet and put it in a closet.

you might not be able to bolt to the wall.......but you can get a gun cabinet, put it in a closet, and mount it to a larger over-size piece of plywood on the bottom or on the back.. You are not bolted to anything except the larger piece of plywood. So they will not be able to man-handle the cabinet out of the closet as it will not fit thru the door. You will have to open the cabinet and remove the nuts to slide the cabinet off the bolts to separate it from the plywood (2x4, etc).

If you'll still be living close enough to the parents, leave them in their safe except for your EDC

For better or for worse, I'm 22. I can't adult well on a lot of things, I'll admit. I know cursive and don't use checks.

One of the reasons I'm going to leave is because my parents aren't regular helicopter parents. If an AH64 and a decked out UH60 had a Little Bird, that would be me.
