All kidding aside, it is really what the individual shoots best and feels the most confident with. Personally my choices are, in this order, .45, .40, .357 Mag and 9MM. The 9MM is a great round and will stop about any human with good shot placement. I like the size and weight of a .45 though. Any ammo testing I have seen shows that a 9MM might expand but a .45 will never shrink. In my short barrel, 3 inch, Kimber .45 I prefer to carry standard FMJ S&B 230 grain.

Are there any statistics regarding civilians with CC weapons ? Shot fired calibers etc.? The FBI has this Info on Police encounters.

If you don't think a 9 is enough, shoot them again. 100% more effective that way.

Reality is, that statistically, most of us will never have to shoot somebody

in SD. But empiric and anecdotal evidence indicates that while 9mm is good,

45ACP seems to have a special advantage.

Very true. No matter what our wives/girlfriends tell us "Size does matter but where you place it is most important".

Ennnhh. I carry 9mm, too. I'm finding smaller CCs in 9mm are easier to find.

I have like most gun guys all manner of handguns. I really like my 5" 1911 .38 Super Comp. loaded with the 124 grs. HPs turning 1,400 fps. That load makes a mess out of anything it hits. The gun I have carried for years is a vintage Colt Mustang .380 loaded with the new .380 SD ammo.

You want something light and comfortable enough that you'll be comfortable carrying it regularly.

I'd highly recommend the FNS-9c. Small and light enough to to be comfortable. Still carries a 12 round mag. Comes with or without a thumb safety according to your preference. If you want even smaller, check out the XDs in 9mm.

Most stops are psychological anyway. Somebody lies down because they are shocked at being shot, or runs away because being shot sucks.

If you run into somebody that is hopped up on drugs and adrenaline who presses the issue after being shot... The advantage of the .45 round probably isn't going to make much difference. You'll want to ventilate them with as many holes as possible to have a better chance of hitting something vital. That means fast, accurate shots on target. 9mm will enable you to achieve that more easily than .45.

keep in mind... This is coming from a guy who is a huge fan of the .45 round.

just get yourself a quality hollow point that functions in your gun and 9mm will do everything you need it to.

underdog, Thx for the link very interesting. I see the .357 Mag. 124 grs. remains the best close combat weapon. My .38 Super Compt. loads equals that load.
