    Default Run & Gun Beginner

I'm hoping to compete in my first ever Run & Gun competition! It's a biathlon consisting of a 5k or a 10k with obstacles and shooting stages (I will be using my Ruger AR-556 MPR and a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 5" 9mm pistol).

Any advice would be great! I will be competing in the "Combat Class" which will require you to finish the competition with 25% of your bodyweight in gear (I weigh around 215 lbs)! I believe the furthest distance between shooting stages is around 1.2 miles. If anyone has experienced a competition like this, would you recommend training to get really good at running shorter distances, or just be conditioned to run a 5k / 10k without stopping? I believe each shooting stage will have a time limit of 3 minutes... In which if you do not finish within the 3 minutes, you will simply record your score for that stage and continue on. Any drills I might need to look into, gear, etc?

Thanks in advance! I'll try to respond to any posts asap!

Default Greetings And Welcome To The Forum

I have never and will never compete in a competition such as that.

If you can't run a straight 10k non stop I would seriously reconsider if you should compete at all. If you are calling 1.2 miles a short distance than by all means practice sprinting it.

I compete in a very similar event on a regular basis. It’s called the drive and work. In these events you drive to a target and shoot nails into very specific places in lumber. On the rare occasion there’s a station where you drive and very quietly get into the Woods a shoot at deer targets.

Im too old to “Run and Gun” but it sounds like fun. Breathing and heart rate are your enemy to accurate shooting. Run and gun sounds like caribou hunting.

Now you all are making me feel old! Lol. I will probably wind up doing the 5k, for the simple fact that I'm not trying to be the best at exercising, but instead just enjoy the experience.

I would agree that heart rate and trying to steady myself will be the most difficult part of the entire event, but I like trying new things. If anything I think it'll be a challenging / humbling experience. I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hopefully not come in dead last! Haha.

It's good to try new things. We can all benefit from being challenged and/or humbled. Who knows you may win, nothing ventured nothing gained. Don't let old folks such as myself discourage you. Good luck to you.
