Question FAL Tearing Brass to pieces. Any ideas?

I recently took my FAL ( Enterprise Arms rec FN parts kit) out shooting. I was shooting mostly Hornady 168 gr BTHP. About every 10th round or so it would completly rip the casing in half about 3/4 inch up from the lip. It's a clean rip. Other rounds that didn't tear have a dent in the casing. It seems to far up the caseing for it to be the extracter. I disassembled the gun and didn't find anthing strange. The extracter looked fine( no wierd wear marks).

I'm not sure what caused this. Any ideas? Most of the time it ejected both pieces but did stovepipe twice.

I don't know if this is the right place on the forum for your question but, I am not familiar with the FAL but I recently aquired an FN49 that is similar, it has an adjustable gas system, like the FAL.
Some of the ammunition I shot was a little weak and the rim was getting nearly ripped off when ejected, and thrown 20 feet.So I dialed back the gas one notch at a time till it started putting them all in one place and undamaged.
Maybe it is in the gas system?

Never had the problem with my FAL but on reading the book, it says to close the gas valve down until it will not eject and then open it back up a bit at a time until it does. You might have to adjust it a little when you switch ammo.
    Hope this helps

a friend had a similar problem with a kel tec 223 assault pistol, the problem was traced to a poor chamber, the weapon was rebarreled, this solved the problem. have a gunsmith slug the chamber. hope this helps
