    Just don't use 9mm short - that is 380.

Any 9mm that says 9x19 is fine!

ALSO, be aware that there's 9mm Largo (9 x 23) and sometimes .380 is called "9mm Kurz" (German for "short") which is 9 x 17. Don't use it.

Pretty much any American brand ammo is going to say "9mm Luger" or "9mm Para" (parabellum); mil is going to say either 9mm NATO or 9mm PARA. The 9mm you want is 9 x 19mm. If in doubt, don't buy it!

I do believe Gunrnr meant to say, 9x19 mm (Luger/Parabellum/NATO) is what you want. The 9x23 mm (Largo) cartridge will not work in your S&W model 59.

I once owned a S&W Model 915 (derived from the 5900 series) that had a very tight chamber. It would accept and chamber all of the commercial loadings that I tried, but there were some 9x19 NATO rounds that wouldn't chamber. My understanding is that military firearms have more "generous" chamber tolerances than commercial pieces, for surety of chambering and extraction, and that the various manufacturers of military ammo are allowed by spec. more leeway in cartridge case dimensions. I also had a Russian made TT-33 that wouldn't accept S&B 7.62x25mm ammo that would fit in my CZ-52???? Anybody else have that or similar experiences?

Yup and yup, you are correct. A handgun, or for that matter a rifle, with a tight chamber will, generally, not chamber military surplus ammunition. Generous military chamber tolerances and generous military ammunition tolerances are the reasons.

I agree that not all 9mm ammo is the same

just like the 9mm short otherwise known as .380

also you may take note of the grains used and the heads used like jacketed hollow point, full metal jacket, hollow point etc.

Have a Makarov that uses 9x18's was told by the guy I bought it from that it was in between the 9x19Luger and the .380 which was 9x17. Was also wondering if the .380 shells can be used in it in a pinch.
