    Default My new Citadel 1911

I recently bought a Citadel 1911. It is a compact model with a 3 1/2" barrel. I originally went into my LGS with the idea to pick up a compact RIA 1911 that I had seen there. Gunrnr recommends them very highly for a good basic 1911 so I decided to give it a try. Anyway, I had one of them in my hand when I saw this gun sitting there. It was another $100 or so. It peaked my curiousity so I asked to look at it.

I am not sure about the whole story between these two guns. I am sure someone here will enlighten me. However, it was very clear that this gun was made in the same place as the RIA model I was holding. They have the same manufacturers stamp in the bottom of the dust cover. They look extremely similiar too. There were some very key differences though.

They both have the same hammers and beavertail grip safeties BUT the grip safety on the Citadel was fit much better and tighter. The grip safety on the RIA would shake around a bit from side to side and seemed a bit loose. I looked at another identical pistol and it was the same way. The Citadel have very little side to side paly and felt alot better.

Another difference was the trigger. The Citadel had an upgraded, skelentonized trigger that I liked the look of alot. Then I dry fired both pistols side by side. Wow, there was a large difference there! The standard RIA had some creep and was a bit heavy. The Citadel was noticably lighter and very crisp (for a basic factory trigger). I was pleased with it and that feeling has continued after shooting it.

The sights on the Citadel look like Novak low mounts and the regular RIA were pretty basic GI looking ones. Both would work but I really like the Citadels better. The grips on the RIA were smooth and the Citadel has "hand engraved" diamond style grips. No big yank there but I do like the traditional checkered panels.

So anyway, I decided to pay the little extra for the Citadel cause I thought the upgrades were worthwhile. I took the gun apart and cleaned it completely. It is a tapered bushingless barrel and field stripping was a piece of cake. I treated it with Eezox and then put a light coating of FP-10 on the contact areas. It operated pretty smoothly so I grabbed Lil W and his 410 too and we headed outside.

I shot five round groups using both mags that came with the gun. The first four groups ended up with the last round in the mag jamming up the gun. It just didn't quite feed all of the way in. No, I was not limp wristing... I didn't worry about it much and just kept shooting. The gun puts 230 grain Federal ball ammo right where the sights are looking at 20-25 feet. I just shot for a bit getting used to how the trigger felt and trying to get some rounds through the gun to break her in a bit. The fifth group shot all of the rounds without a hitch and from there on there were zero malfunctions.

At first the slide was tough to release also. It just seemed very tight. That quickly became easier. It still seems nice and tight but releases with no problems using the thumb on the slide release or, my favorite, the slingshot method.

So now I was done with my first box of ammo and it was functioning beautifully. The big bullets were smacking whatever I put that front sight on. Lil W and I took turns blasting pop cans. He shot really good until his little shoulder began getting sore. I was having a very easy time hitting a can at 15 feet and bouncing it back further and further. It was easy to make hits with the little 1911. I am really happy with the way it is shooting.

All in all, I am really happy with the gun. I don't hold the early functioning issues against it. I always plan on breaking a pistol in anyway and once it had 20 rounds or so through it, it began flawless functioning.

Here is a pic. I have a cheap little IWB holster for it for now. I need to get something nicer soon.

I think it is a really good gun for the money. I need to go get some more ammo now.

Looks nice BW - i'd be interested in shooting one of those little 1911's.

I dont think you can beat an Armscor gun in terms of bang for the buck. My Rock Island has over 1000 trouble free rounds through it, the slide/frame, bushing/slide, and barrel/ bushing fits are all tight, and the trigger is a clean consistent 4 pounds. The RI was my first 1911, i've since added other brands to the collection and in my opinion the RI is easily worth twice what I paid for it. I am looking at a 1911 in 9mm and it will probably be a Rock Island.

Citadel is basically an optioned up Rock Island. There is a gun marketed as an American Classic that I think is an Armscor gun too. STI, if I am not mistaken are Armscor parts that are assembled in Texas.

Congrats on the new gun, I've read a lot of good reviews on that one.

I have the MetroArms American Classic too in a full size model. Its a good gun too but this Citadel has a few more bells and whistles.
