Default Sccy CPX-1 9mm slide cracked!

Went to visit and shoot with a friend of mine today, shot a number of different guns and sent several hundred rounds downrange. He offered his new Sccy for me to shoot and see what I thought. After five rounds, I noticed two marks on the front of the slide. Ran my fingers over them only to find out that the slide had two cracks right where it runs on the rail. It wasn't cracked before we went out to shoot. When he first got it, he had a magazine split right down the seam. Needless to say, and in my opinion, it is not a very well made gun. He is sure that they will take care of it, but he now has no faith in the gun itself.

Other than that, it was a great day well worth the four hours on the road.

SCCY? Didn't they used to be SKKY?

Huh, I am not real familiar with that gun. By the sounds of it, I think I will keep it that way.

I find it interresting that the first thing you see on their web site is the warranty information. To me, a lifetime warranty is great, but it should not need to be part of a sales pitch, the gun should stand for itself. That beign said, there is a lifetime transferrable warranty, so they should take care of it. I would get it fixed, sell the gun, then buy a new gun.

The people who started-up SKKY industries were previously employees of Kel-Tec - they moved down the road aways and started their own company with several designs that are very very very similar to the Kel-Tec pistols with a few cosmetic and a few functional changes (such as a manual safety). The SCCY CPX-9 is pretty close to the P11 Kel-Tec, except the 9 has a safety. We've sold over sixty (60) of these in our shop since middle of last year - they are popular because of price - and have had NO returns and NO complaints. On the other hand - we sold 4 of the S&W PPKs that had to be returned for recall, 12 of the Ruger LPCs that had to be returned for recall, 8 of the Ruger SR9s that had to be returned for recall AND had one S&W 686 NIB returned to the shop with a blown out cylinder - everybody makes a stinker now and then. Be cautious when painting with a broad brush, sometimes you may overpaint a masterpiece.

32Magnum, I agree with you completely. Stuff happens. Any company can have a bad piece. Some on here feel it is their duty to slam guns that they once had a problem with or even worse, heard of someone else having a problem with. Others, as in this case, jump to a conclusion that a company makes lousy guns cause one broke without even asking questions about what or how it happened. One gun is no way to judge a company, especially if you do not know the whole story of the incident.

its a shame really that folks are that way... when you see the same person attacking the same company over and over, soon it starts to eat away at a persons credibility.

On the other hand, the company in question in right over in Daytona.... tomorrow I am calling them, asking if they welcome visitors, and if possible I am going over to look around. I'll let you know their response.....

As I was not bashing a gun company, there are several people that have had problems and dislikes with them. Most all of what I have read have been forums and that should be taken for what it's worth. I did say that I did not feel it is a well made gun, but do also believe that they will take care of the problem.

As far as the gun itself, it has a good feel, shoots good, and has good cosmetics. I do know that there have been slide failures with them, and they are fixing them. I also know that they are blaming some of it on Remington ammo, which was never used in this gun. It has only had WWB and Blazer aluminum run through it. The main complaint is about the safety with slides breaking coming in second. My friend also had one magazine split down the seam on the first time out. SCCY has taken care of him so far and he expects nothing less from them now. These are all issues with the same gun.

I have had issues with different brands too, and have never had a problem with them being taken care of. Bashing any company that is committed to taking care of customers is not called for. I just hope that they come up with a fix or modification before someone gets hurt.

Heck, I have a friend that bought a Walther 22 for his wife.

The thing kept keyholing the target.

Turns out that the rifling only went about 1/2 way down the barrel.

OK gentlemen.... I just spoke to SCCY on the phone. I spoke with a very nice lady who tried to help me out.

Turns out the company does not allow visitors and they refused a tour of their facility.

I explained who I was and that the subject of cracked slides had come up on the forum. I told her that I thought it was unfair that they should not be able to tell their side of the story. She asked me to hold and went to talk to her boss.

When she came back she said he told her no visitors and that he was not concerned about reports of cracked slides. He said that those on-line reports don't mean anything and he is not worried about any on-line reports there may be. She apologized and I hung up.

I tried to get both sides... the "boss" would not even give me the courtesy of speaking to me himself, he had his receptionist deliver his message.

Personally, I'm disappointed. If he cares that little about public opinion that he can't at least explain his feelings to someone who may be a future customer then how much does he care about customers after the sale.

At this point I will not say I won't buy one of these guns. I will say that with other better known manufacturers building the same type of gun in the same price range, it is not a gun I see in my future. Maybe I would buy a used one that has been broken in, and even then it would have to have a very low price...
