    Default 10/22 Upgrades...

I have an old 10/22 that was my first gun that my Dad originally bought at a pawn shop for my 13th birthday.

I was looking at some stuff in the recent cabelas catalog that I received, and now I'm interested in doing some upgrades on my 10/22. I was thinking maybe a fluted SS barrel like this one:

(You have to change the color to the SS fluted model to see it).

I was also thinking some sort of stock upgrade, maybe something like this:

Additionally I was thinking of adding a nice little rimfire scope to play with. Have any of you done upgrades like this to your 10/22s? Do you think you can improve the accuracy of the gun with any specific upgrades? I have never taken mine fully apart, but figured I could find a nice video on youtube. Any suggestions, thoughts, comments?

I would not add a "rimfire scope". I suggest you go with a quality scope.

Maybe I was misleading, I didn't mean a cheap scope like the ones they call 'rimfire scopes'. Just one that doesn't necessarily have to take the recoil from a 375 H&H Magnum.

phiya there are a number of Forum Members that have upgraded their 10/22's. With all the after market stuff available for these guns you are really only limited by your imagination and how much money you want to spend.

As far as barrels, there are an untold number of barrel manufacturers that produce barrels from mild to wild. Some are better than others, with the difference many times in the eyes of the buyer. Stocks are the same way... some are absolutely gorgeous and others look like they came off the set of a scifi movie.

One suggestion I would make.... I don't know how big you are but many, if not most, of the after market stocks have a short length of pull. The better stocks usually list the LOP with the specs of the stock.

If you purchase the bull barrel you mentioned you have to change the stock. The bull barrel is .920 and will not fit in a stock Ruger stock unless it is a stock made by Ruger to accept the thicker barrel.

Here is the list of changes I would make if, like you, I just wanted to upgrade a favorite plinker and didn't want to invest a ton of money.

    #1 The barrel

    #2 The stock

#3 I would add an extended magazine release. Makes it a lot easier to drop the magazine...

#4 I would install a custom bolt lock so I didn't have to fumble with that little button behind the magazine to release or lock back the bolt. When the gun is empty, or you pull the slide to the rear it will lock and just a slight pull on the charging handle releases the bolt forward.

#5 I would replace the metal bolt slide stop with a synthetic one. It won't increase accuracy but it will make the working of the action a lot quieter.

Not including the barrel and stock you can make the other changes yourself for less than 20 or 25 dollars. Let me know if you are going to order any of this stuff and I'll share a site that gives free shipping....

You can also go farther if you like. You can have the bolt faced, polished, firing pin and channel polished, hardened tuned extractor, titanium firing pin installed, custom charging rod with brass bushing and oversize charging handle, Wolff charging rod spring, custom trigger parts, competition trigger, complete trigger group, and custom sights or scope added. Like I said... the sky is the limit.

Just do a google search for "10/22 barrel" or "10/22 stock" and you will find a huge amount of choices. I have many, many custom .22 sites in my favorites. I will be glad to share if you need any of them. I also have lots of photos of finished builds if you need any ideas.

Have fun with your gun! It's a lot of fun to work on and build and some, my self included, claim it is addicting!

    Don,

Thanks for the info! I was planning on also installing one of those extended mag releases with my build. If you don't mind, could you link me to one of the custom bolt locks you mentioned. And I'd love to see pictures of yours and anyone else's custom 10/22 builds!

Here are a couple links to the bolt release... both Voltquarsen and Gun King are good people to work with. VQ is absolutely top quality with a no questions asked (that has been my experience) service policy. GK offers lots of 10/22 stuff. Just go back in the link to their homepage and look around. GK is a bit faster to ship and does not charge shipping..

Here are a few pics of finished guns. Depending on your server, they may take a while to load. When I have more time I'll post more....

I think the 6th picture down on this page is one of the most beautiful 10/22's Ive ever seen...

LOL like I said welcome to the addiction.

I have done just about every modification possible to mine and let me tell you it is a tack driver:4:

If you have any questions just ask I will give you the best advice I can from the research I have done and my experience with my build. Naturally what you ultimately want from your build will be your deciding factor for what you do or don't do to your build.
