Default Questions about Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle ammo.

I'm thinking about buying the all weather version of the Mini 14 Ranch rifle. On [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] they show all of the ranch rifles as being chambered for 5.56 mm and .223 Rem. I stopped by a local store here where I have some gift cards, etc racked up to take a look at it. On the receiver it is stamped .223. The guy at the store said if it is marked .223 it won't shoot 5.56mm, but if it is marked with 5.56 mm it would also shoot .223.

I've seen comments on the web that aside from the target versions all of the Mini 14s stamped .223 can also shoot 5.56, and this seems to be backed up in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (P 12):

The RUGER® MINI-14® RANCH RIFLES are offered in two calibers: the
.223 Remington (5.56mm) cartridge and the 6.8mm Remington SPC cartridge.
The Target Model uses .223 Remington cartridges only.

Having a rifle which will shoot both safely is an important feature to me, so I wanted to double check with the guys here. Does anyone here have a Ranch rifle stamped as .223? If so, can it safely shoot both? Or do some mini 14s come stamped with 5.56 on the receiver?

My wife has one but we've only ever shot .223 in it.

I have owned(and traded or sold) 3 Mini-14's over the years. All were marked 223 and I shot military surplus 5.56 out of all of them with no problems, oooof course ,this is my experience, yours may be different.

They are ALL stamped .223, but are well publicised as being safe with 5.56 mil-surp ammo.

I hate to be too much of an opportunist but we're looking to sell ours. If you're in the area any time soon, let me know a couple weeks ahead of time and we'll take it out and let you test drive it, even if you don't buy THIS one!

    From the manual

    AMMUNITION
The RUGER® MINI-14® RANCH RIFLES are chambered for the .223
Remington (5.56mm) cartridge. The Ranch Rifle is designed to use either
standardiz U.S. military or factory loaded sporting .223 (5.56mm) cartridges
manufactured in accordance with U.S. industry practice.
