Default Whats the closest semi-auto civilian version to the M-16?

Im thinking about getting an AR-15. Whats the closest variant of the civilian AR-15 to the military M-16? Dosen't Colt make the M-16 for the military or is it Armalite? Does anybody make semi-auto reproductions of the original M16A1? Or the M16A2? And whats the closest to the current issue M16?
    Thanks-

FN makes the M16s for US military, Colt makes the M4s. Yes, you can make a M16A1 or M16A2 clone. For the current M16 you need a flat top receiver, A2 stock and grip, 20" barrel, and the round plastic hand guards.

I put together a civilian version of an M16 with dj's help.

It gets a lot of attention at the range, especially from vets whoserved in the Vietnam era.

Here is the link with pictures....

Building one is an idea. But are any of the civilian model AR-15's close to the M16 with a 20" barrel?

I've looked at several manufacture's catalogues and you can custom order something like you want from Les Baer but that can be very pricey. The least expensive route is to buy a 20" A2 and dress it with Vietnam era furniture.

I basically looked around and built mine from US Goverment surplus parts.

For instance, today I found a complete Colt Bolt Carrier Group and bolt in like new condition surplus for $90.

    Everywhere...everyone sells an A2 upper.

The real thing you need to decide is...which version of the military gun do you actually want? Because there are about 6 versions of "military" M16's out there, from 1960's to the present...and I assume you do not mean the M-4, right?

My Bushmaster is basically an A1 lower, with an A1 handle/rear sight, but an A2 forend and 20" barrel.

I think I want something like a A2 M16, building an A1 sounds expensive and parts difficult to get. Basically I want something with a 20 inch barrel, a fixed stock, military spec sights with the carrying handle and basically something that looks, functions, and feels like a M16 that is an older A1 or A2 setup without all the bells and whistles. I don't much about AR15's but it would be nice to build or buy one that can shoot both .223 and 5.56 in the same gun.
