    Default Smolt

Ever hear of one? I purchased one this past Friday.

Made by Bill Davis, a Master Revolversmith, sometime in the late 1970s.

Its a totally worked S&W 19-4 wearing a 6" Colt Python barrel and Pachmyer grips.

Double action trigger pull is just over 4lbs. Single action... let's say it was not designed to be fired in the single action mode unless you know exactly what you are doing.

I dislike Pachmayer grips and I have a set of Herrett's Shooting Stars put aside for this revolver.

Its between 85% and 90% of new.

I probably paid too much but I wanted it. Now I wait the State mandated 10 days.

It looks like this except for considerably less muzzle wear and it has Pachmayer grips.

That sure is purdy! I wouldn't sleep well for ten nights knowing something bad could happen before then!

Bill Davis was an ex-CHP officer who was a well-known Grand Master PPC shooter and most of what their company made were custom bull-barreled PPC revolvers. He was also a pioneer in area of round and slab sided bull barrel PPC version revolvers. He also invented the "Speedfeed" stock for police shotguns which was purchased and put into production by Mossberg.

The reason for a Colt barrel on a Smith action goes back to the early days of PPC. The Colt barrels were a uniform .356 bore, the Smiths ran .357-.359 erratically, the Colt barrels were more accurate, but the Smith K frame actions were more durable and their triggers capable of being finer tuned.

Bill Davis also did this with the S&W M13, M14, M15, M686, Ruger Security Six and Speed Six.

The Couger grew out of the Smolt project. Some customers wanted the same done to their Ruger Security-Six and Bill had the shop put some together. It was a great marriage because it added weight to the front, many were in the 4" barrel length, and added the better Colt rifling twist.

That is a great lookin' pistol popeye. Interesting story too.
We don't have a waiting period for firearms in Kansas. It would suck to have to wait 10 days before you could pick up your new gun.

Just what I need Popeye... something else to watch out for!

Is he the same Bill Davis that provides props for movies?

I have seen 2 Bill Davis custom guns.... both were bull barrel model 10s with an add on rib, some funky smooth hand carved grips and worked triggers.

The triggers were pretty good but I don't know that they were better than a standard Smith. Both guns wereavailable for $300 or less.

I wasn't impressed enough to buy one but this gun you have interests me.

I understand your explanation of why the Colt barrel but I need to research it a bit... either way, if I come across one it will have a new home.

    Thanks Popeye!

Bill Davis, today, is an old man. He was last I heard enjoying his retirement.

Since his shop was in Sacramento, later in West Sacramento, we have his revolvers wander through the shop a couple of times a year. Usually when an old shooter dies.

Sad to say, that is what is happening in the custom revolver world to some extent. Old men have to die sometime. Then the kids have an auction!

Oh well, if they'd rather have the money than the artworks, finely smithed pistols hold their value real well. That's not gonna change.
